    Migrating to full HTTPS

    Hi Seochat,

I have a question for anyone with experience in migrations of HTTP / WWW to HTTPS.

    My scenario is as following:
    • My website is already well indexed and have a lot of users
    • My website is indexed with both WWW and HTTPS versions
    • It causes duplicate content and I am planning to make a full migrate from WWW / HTTP to HTTPS

Since I have 100+ great rankings as it is now on BOTH www versions as well as HTTPS versions, I'm a little concerned if the full migrate to HTTPS (meaning any other domain request will just 301 redirect to HTTPS) will cost me the great rankings I have now on HTTP?

I am doing everything I can to minimize the risk of the migrate, by fixing all internal links, doing the proper redirects by then etc. etc. and I have researched on the actual task for months.

But what will happen to the WWW versions and their (as it is today) great rankings if they now get redirected from HTTP to the same page but in HTTPS?

providing you do the 301 redirect correctly you wont see a drop in rankings and if you do it will just be a small blip as google pick up the changes.
The thing to watch out for though is chaining 301 redirects, thats something to be avoided.
    so as an example

    none www redirecting to www
    www redirecting to https

All the redirects should goto the final page.

One nice thing though, with a 301 redirect it used to be the case that you lost a little page rank, Google have since stopped doing that because I believe of the amount of people changing over to https.

Going forward, if you know where all the external links are, if possible you should try and get as many of them to change the link to the https version once live.
Also dont forget to set up the https version in search console, you cant use your old one as that will be for the http version.

Just out of curiosity, what is the best way to verify redirects are correct?
