Question Keywords in the URL - still a ranking factor? Thoughts..

    Hi all,

This is my first post here. I've been blogging for about two years now and learning lots about SEO along the journey. Some hits and misses of course but about 50% of traffic now comes from Google so I've been getting something right. Haha

I am wondering about your opinion on the following scenario...

I am going to be starting a new blog soonish and have been able to secure a .com URL with a large search volume two-word keyword in it. Is that still that useful in 2017? I'm thinking it is still important in the SEO mix but wonder what you think?
I have another URL version that I actually prefer in terms of name but it doesn't really have any search volume benefits in terms of keywords.

So...do you think keywords in URL (if you can get them) are still important? Or should I just take the URL I prefer in terms of name and forget about the keywords?

    The URLs are...
    victoriasurfing.com (Good search volumes) &
vicsurfing.com (my preference for a brand name. Shorter/ snappier but no keyword benefits)

    Any thoughts? Cheers Saxter

    Hi

I'd say there is possibly some benefit, but not as useful as it might have been in the past. It's certainly low in the list of potential ranking factors.

I would take the URL you prefer; good branding is probably more useful.

    Cheers

Yes using the keywords in domain, some do rank high but It is better to go for a branded URL instead of an exact match URL as in my experience the exact match tend to get penalised more easily.

Thanks MakeMaya. It's actually for a new site. I just have to pick one as the primary domain. I'll just 301 the other to the 'winner'
