    International SEO - Multiple SEO - Special Case - No Agency knows an answer

    Hello,

    I have been trying to optimize my website which targets expats / germans living abroad.
    The Website has a .de ending and I found that I do not show up in google.at or google.ch

    I have know purchased the .net version of my website and would like to use this one for targeting worldwide.
    The problem with this is of course that I risk duplicate conten.

    So far no agency was able to help me and they want to sell me SEO packages or entirely switch my whole Domain to the .Net URl which I personally think is not a good idea because I fear that I might lose my SEO placement with the .de website.

    I have read that you have to do "website pointing" and not "redirect" the website.

    Has anyone an idea if this would help the ranking? Is this even a good idea?

    Thank you

    Well the agencies you must have approached are obviously not very good. - edit - atleast at international SEO, they may be great for other bits - edit- The reason you don't rank in google.at or google.ch is because the .de domain is focused at google.de.

    What you need to use is hreflang tags.

    So on the .net site you would have

    Code:
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-at" href="http://www.domain.net/at/"/><link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-ch" href="http://www.domain.net/ch/"/>

    ---- Extra space to actually see code -----
    Then you can use the hreflang to say that this page for users in germany shows this:
    Code:
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-at" href="http://www.domain.de"/>

    ---- Extra space to actually see code -----

    Thank you so much for the answer!

    Is it possible to use the hreflags in my .de website?

    Do you reckon there would be a problem with duplicate content as the .de and .net site would be interchangable (through a redirect) and compete against each other?

    If you implement the hreflang and canonical and x default tags correctly as Thomas Harvey pointed out, you can then (theoretically) use the exact same content down to the last letter and not incur any duplicate issues.

    Do not use redirects !

    This is because you are telling Google this page is for this country, and this page is for this country, etc etc. Google will sort it out properly because of the tags.

    ( maybe a more verbose example will help )

    on domain.net
    <link rel="canonical" href="https://domain.net/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://domain.net/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-GB" href="https://domain.co.uk/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="de" href="https://domain.de/"/>

    on domain.co.uk
    <link rel="canonical" href="https://domain.co.uk/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://domain.co.uk/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="de" href="https://domain.de/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-US" href="https://domain.net/"/>

    on domain.de
    <link rel="canonical" href="https://domain.de/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://domain.de/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-GB" href="https://domain.co.uk/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-US" href="https://domain.net/"/>

    Just to highlight what KnowOneSpecial said, this is the code (needed to put in code tags)

    Code:
    on domain.net<link rel="canonical" href="https://domain.net/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://domain.net/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-GB" href="https://domain.co.uk/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="de" href="https://domain.de/"/>

    on domain.co.uk
    <link rel="canonical" href="https://domain.co.uk/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://domain.co.uk/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="de" href="https://domain.de/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-US" href="https://domain.net/"/>

    on domain.de
    <link rel="canonical" href="https://domain.de/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://domain.de/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-GB" href="https://domain.co.uk/"/>
    <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-US" href="https://domain.net/"/>
