    Indexing Problem

    Hi All,

I submitted the sitemap on past 15 days. But it is indexed only 4 pages, 1695 pages submitted.

What should I do to index all pages.

Here are some of the possible problems

    1. Duplicate content will make your page not index.
    2. If you have a WordPress site you may ticked option for "Discourage search engine from crawling your site" (General settings) or u are using NO INDEX/no follow on your pages (very unlikely).
    3. "1695 pages" You should use Screaming Frog to check for URL errors and if it's blocked by robots.txt (disallow) or .htaccess.

Yes I checked all the possibilities.
Ours is not a wordpress site.
Previously all pages are indexed but recently we changed the URL structure and added meta tags.
Then I submitted sitemap and robots.txt, but it is showing only 4 pages indexed in 1695 pages.

Are you able to post the link as website.com, so Google would be google.com

"but recently we changed the URL structure and added meta tags"
Are your old URL's returning 404's? If yes, you forgot to let Google know about your change. 301 redirect your old URLs to the new structure (you can use .htaccess) and resubmit it to Google.

PS: If you are doing any kind of change Google always asks website owners to test your changes- meaning in your case: create 4 to 5 new URLs and 301 redirect them check if it's working and ranking. Rader then change 1695 of them.

I almost changed 1000+ Urls..How can I redirect old URLs to New URLS in a bulk way?
Why not new urls are indexing?

Please be patient Google web master tools will take some time to index all URLs. In case if you have waited for a long time still there is no increase in indexed URLs then you can go through the link (https://moz.com/blog/8-reasons-why-y...ot-get-indexed) I found this very helpfu. Hope you can find the answer here.

Why not new URLs are indexing?

In Google eyes your site have pages that are still indexed and they existin Google database but they have 404 status. Now why Google would want to index pages with the same content on the same website. It doesn't make any sense. So they give an option of 301 to let them know of your change.

How can I redirect old URLs to New URLS in a bulk way?

One option use .htaccess file for 301. Sorry. I've done 301 like this just once with a client website, long time ago, so I'm not an expert. Wait for more advanced members.

PS: It may take up to a month to index things in Google.

Yes it makes sense..But that is the reason only we are re-submitting the sitemap to re-index the pages. It doesn't make any sense?

I totally agree but there is transition period between de-indexing old content and indexing new one, that is possibly causing the problem.

    Hi trainingsadda

    For help with redirects....
It would help to see some your your current 404 urls to see if there is a pattern you could match to help with redirects.
Depends if the actual file name changed or the directory structure or possibly both.

I looked at your site, I see a problem, and it may be part of your issue....Not having seen your site before the change this is what I found....

Every page on your site I have examined has a rel canonical pointing to the home page of your site. I checked a lot of your pages it appears on like almost every page.
Notice a second picture... here is the link for it.. >>> 6 Dangerous Rel Canonical Problems Based on Crawling 11M+ Pages in 2014
(its an older article, but applies here I think )

    So is that a Issue?

Now what should I do index all pages?
