Huge number of crawled- not indexed results

My site used to have very stable numbers of pages that were crawled- not indexed in the Google search console. Out of around 20,000 pages there were only about 500 not indexed. Suddenly now that number has started rising quite a lot and is now sitting at 5,000 that are crawled- not indexed, and only getting higher each week.

This started happening only a few days after our site was entered into the mobile-first index, and subsequently our SERPs have started falling and clicks from organic search starting to fall. There are other factors that may have caused the rankings drop as our site is up and down in traffic as it is seasonal and depends on weekly events, but the timing is too 'convenient' for me.

All the pages have been checked that they can be crawled and indexed fine on both desktop and mobile and arent blocked in anyway. Has anyone else had this? Or found any of the similar things happen to them?

I would look into that. Mobile-first indexing means that Google has changed its standards when indexing websites on mobile search. If your site is not mobile-friendly, it will now be algorithmically penalised due to the new standards in place (but only during mobile searches). It's possible that you were previously doing ok (on mobile search) despite not being mobile-friendly because mobile-first indexing was not yet in place.

Just because they can be crawled and indexed doesn't mean they will perform competitively. Your competitors can likely be crawled and indexed too. The game is whether your pages will perform better than your competitors.

Check your speed on mobile. Check how your site looks on mobile. Analyse what you can improve on the site when viewed on mobile. And since two heads are better than one, get others' feedback on what can be improved on your site when viewed on mobile.

Our site goes by all the google guidelines for the mobile index- responsive design, no drop off of links or content, all pages tested for mobile usability and pass the tests. Some of the pages are slow on mobile and have seen a drop in rankings which i can understand and we are in the process of fixing them.
Im not saying that if they are indexed and crawled they should be competitive, im just wondering why this has happened and mainly if anybody has seen something similar. Just so happened that these occurred at the same time so wanted to see if anyone had experienced the same and did anything to solve it

Hi Mika. You can always share your URL so we can have a look to see if something is wrong. A second opinion would be wise especially if the original opinion is not producing the supposed results. But of course we respect if you prefer to keep it confidential.
