    How Important is Sitemap.

I want to know how important it is to set priority in a sitemap. I have a website, in which the sitemap does not have any priority set. But in my view the priority should be set for important web pages and home page it should be 1.Though without setting any priority Google will still index your website but my question is how important it is to create a sitemap with a priority listed out in it.

A site map isn't really needed, a link will do the same as far as getting spidered.

I agree that in most cases, search engines should be able to find everything. But I have had a couple of instances where I couldn't get a page indexed - until I created a sitemap. Having one also seems to speed up the process of indexing.

Just to answer your questions regarding sitemap "priority" settings... Best answer regarding this in google forums is:
How does Google make use of changefreq?
They probably don't use it at all, especially if a lastmod is there, which would override a general changefreq(uency).
If there is no lastmod, they'll adapt their crawling schedule according to their experiences with your site automatically.
If they find the frequency of change to be low over time, they'll probably also crawl less frequently, if changes are frequent, they'll crawl more frequently.
(You can see the discussion here).
