if you mean your adding styling to the H1 tag via a class then yes its still a h1 tag as it was before.
    <h1>My H1 tag</h1>
    <h1 class="my_style">My H1 tag</h1>
    are both the same.

yes, I dont understand why you would think it would not.
Easy way of testing is load up your page in a browser and view the source, if you see 2 x h1 tags then so will google.

Thanks, that's exactly what I thought. I just needed confirmation. My developer is telling me other wise.

There is a debate regarding having 1 x H1 tag is better than 2. It appears mostly to be personal preference. Seeing as its quite a powerful element I tend to reserve it for what it was meant for i.e. the Headline of the page. h2 h3 etc are sub headings. In the light of single page websites this old technique seems to been forgotten about by many newer developers.

In the early days webpages where developed very much like newspapers
So to cover a news story there would be a main headline normally shown in large bold font
    next came a Illustration (image)
and then text which may include some sub headings to break up the story or content.

This is the standard HIT format used by the majority of newspapers around the world.

Google fully understand this format and surprisingly its a format users are used to seeing as well in their morning papers.

A newspaper carrying more than 1 main story on the front page though can be confusing and the really important story can get lost is there are several which is why a newspaper tends to run 1 main story on the front page and smaller less important story's lower down or on inner pages.

Old school regarding this I believe is still the most powerful format and is clear however google will not penalise you if you decide to go for more, its just your message might not be as powerful.
