Google my business verification WITHOUT postcard?

Google does not give a definitive answer as to how I can verify a business in GMB without postcards. It says that some businesses MAY be eligible for phone/email verification. Also, some businesses MAY be eligible for instant GMB verification through Search Console. But there's no definitive answer.

I remember reading somewhere that this workaround can be useful:
Create listings on business directories such as YP, CitySearch and Yelp.
Google will then automatically create a Maps listing for your business using that information, within 24-48 hrs.
Verify that Maps listing with your website's Search Console email address. This way, you (probably) won't need postcard verification.

How would you go about verifying a business in GMB without postcards?

I am struggling to understand why bypassing the postcard route is a major issue for any legitimate site.
    Maybe I am missing something.

I just verified our church's listing, but I can't remember exactly how I did it. I couldn't verify it via postcard because our mailing address is a PO Box and not the physical address. I couldn't verify it by phone because I don't own a mobile device. We already had a Map listing and I created a Google Page a few years ago, but never verified it. Recently we changed the name and website URL, so I used the 'Suggest an Edit' on Google Maps and somehow got it verified. Could be because I had the correct e-mail credentials for our Search Console and Google Page.

Actually I'm just looking for some concrete info on the criteria of Google. Because Google say that they can verify some "select businesses" without postcard verification.
I want to know what exactly they mean by "select businesses". As Hirin Mike said below in his reply, it MAY be possible if a business is already listed on Maps, and website owner has verified the website in Search Console. Then MAY BE he can automatically verify the business on GMB using the same email address of Search Console account. That's my one theory.
My other theory is the one that I've given in my original post.

I also think that if a business is already on Maps, then it may be possible to verify it on GMB without a postcard.
