    Duplicates, canonicals, and shorter urls

    Hello there!

I am kind of new to canonicals and short urls and so forth, but since i couldnt find any real answer by using google, i thought about asking here instead.

I have alot of duplicates of a specific page on my site, and wanted to put canonicals on them and also a new url as the shortest url possible.

For instance, of one page i have an url of mysite.com/categoryone/pageone and another duplicate has mysite.com/categoryone/subcategoryone/pageone

If i would make another duplicate of all my pages on my site to mysite.com/pageone, mysite.com/pagetwo and so forth, and put canonicals from the urls with the categories to the shortest urls possible, would i in some way lose the SEO ranking from the longer urls, or would redirecting them thru canonicals help with that?

Ive had those longer urls for years, and im worrying that if i would put the shorter urls with canonicals to them, that i would lose all the hard work.

    Any insights on this matter?

    Jonas B

Maximum recommended length of an url on your site should be less than 115 characters

Unless you are hitting that limit often I would really not worry about, but this seems to be an industry standard. Don't get too wrapped up chasing this ...
Just remember, the shorter the better, but too short can be just as bad as to long.

I look at the url with the view, does it convey the intent, and does it have value.

here is an off the hip example to help explain it...not saying use this as is....
