    Duplicate content from categories.

    Hi guys,

I'm looking for some SEO advice, specifically waiting to duplicate categories in Woocommerce. They are there for user experience!

I'm not sure if I can post links, so for now I'll just give an example of categories.

I have a thousand or so products, crystals minerals and fossils.

So, a product like an Amethyst Palmstone might have two categories:
    Search by Stone>Amethyst>Palmstones
    Crystal Healing>Palmstones>Amethyst

These two categories do really need to be there for user experience but for SEO purposes one is redundant and will be damaging ranking.

    I could either:

    - No index all categories and make landing pages for specific things - seems weird, would have to remake UX entirely and update every time a product is added.
    - Find a way to canonical one category over the other?

    Any advice?

    Thank you in advance.
    John

Its not really a issue, I would assume you want to rank the products themselves and not so much the category page.
regardless of how the users get to the page I would guess you have only one page per product.

In some cases yes, in some, not so much - I have products with specific sizes for jewellers, too.

Think "4MM faceted Amethyst", "5MM faceted Amethyst", etc. In this instance would it not be better to rank the overall "faceted Amethyst" category?

Regarding the duplicate content, if you don't think its an issue, should I not bother doing SEO work on the categories at all and focus on the products?

    Thanks.

If the products are the most important pages then that's where your attention should be,
Nobody buys a category so in some respects they are less important, that does not mean ignore them as they help give meaning and structure to your site.

I have plenty of categories that rank way above the products, as most of the products are purely for different sizes, and there is way more traffic without the size in search.

So... yeah, the categories are important and I still don't know what to do RE the duplicate content.

THe common way to do it is with a variant listing, If its the same product but available in different sizes then that is 1 page with the option to choice.
This drastically cuts down the size of your site and duplication issues giving you far more time to write proper descriptions for 1 product instead of many.

Good idea; lot of work ahead but that will definitely work.

    Thanks.
