Do forums work for SEO/traffic anymore?

    Hey everyone -

I'm working on marketing my site for social anxiety sufferers <snip>

I used to do forums back in the day (2008-10).

I understand SEO has changed a lot since then.

Looks like forums these days, for the most part, don't allow links in signatures anymore.

So, are they still viable for SEO (but mostly driving traffic) these days?

If so, what tactics do you use that won't get you banned?

    Thanks,

    Dan

You mean like trying to include a link when it's not needed?

If I were a search engine bot, I would flag any link or URL posted on a SEO forum as "dodgy at best".
    I'm just sayin'...

Traffic 100% forums can and do bring you traffic, SEO most forums are no follow so no they wont help in the slightest.

However to show how traffic can come from forum type sites, Someone (nothing to do with me) posted one of my sites on Reddit the other night. Normally this site bumps alone with 5 - 10 users on line at any one time. Within 30 minutes of this post making what's hot on reddit this is what I saw

So the link it provided was worthless but the extra traffic it gave the site was most welcome.

Helpful info, everyone. How does not posting any links, but only keeping your link in profile, while offering useful answers to questions work? Do people take the time to go to your profile and click over to your website these days (as long as you've provided a valuable answer)?

It depends. Forum signatures can do the same thing. I dunno - speaking personally, when I meet someone on a forum who is consistently helpful and friendly I do like to see what's in their profile and who they are. Maybe they have even more helpful stuff off of the forums that I could look at. It's a lot of personal relationship building.

We have another great thread about this too - one of my favorites. A bit dated but I think the advice is still applicable. There's some other neat benefits besides traffic that I hadn't considered until I read it: How To: Use Forums For SEO
