"Crawl only this URL" vs. "Crawl this URL and its direct links"

After making changes to a number of pages in a huge site, is there any reason why it would be better to use "Crawl only this URL" on each of the edited pages separately as opposed to doing a single swoop "Crawl this URL and its direct links" at the root domain level? E.g. depending on the no. of pages in the domain, does the latter potentially take more time to take effect?

It will take longer to crawl the entire site, but if you've altered a large number of pages it's probably the best route.
