Question Advice on Using Tags & Categories in Wordpress; NoIndex or Not?

    Hi there,

This is my 1st post, hopefully I'm in the right section of the forum.

I've got a question about my Wordpress blog with regard the SEO setup. The site is quite old and has 3000+ posts. The structure is that it has about 5 pages, and then uses categories and tags like normal. Categories are used in the site navigation menu.

When I do a Google search for my site ("site:http://footyblog.net"), a lot of Categories are indexed, and some tags are also indexed, and then some posts are mixed throughout the results.

My main concern is about duplicate content - will my site be considered as having duplicate content due to the Category and Tag pages? I read from a Yoast article that Category pages should have introductory text used because they're a good landing page, and that Tag pages can be used in a similar way. But then I've heard conflicting advice about these pages, and that they shouldn't be indexed.

I'd really appreciate any advice on this, thanks!

    Hi glenbelt,

The way your site is constructed looks fine to me.
Categories aren't used in the Post URL's/Permalinks so links from tags and categories go to the same post URL's.

Most of the tags don't mimic the categories - except "Champions League", (which is an obvious weakness - and the reason behind the advice to "noindex" one or the other) but:
The addition of unique "introductory text" on the category page...
Plus the fact that they don't include exactly the same list of posts...
And that both cat's and tags use snippets linked to full posts...
Means that both pages have many differences.

If you're concerned, you could increase the "introductory text" - and make sure that - if you add introductory text to the tag page you use different text.

Otherwise I don't think you need to be concerned about it
