    1 domain for multiple countries

    Hi there,

We have a website (www.secondhandboards.com) that was originally set up to work in the UK only.

It ranks very well for the primary keyword phrase *used surfboards* - we're #1 in the UK and have been for years.

We've expanded 6 months ago into the USA.

Sadly we just don't get any traction with ranking for *used surfboards*.

Im getting mixed opinions as to why. Lets presume the on-page seo is fine.

Im of the opinion that we now need to have 2 different URLS for UK and USA home page (currently both use www.secondhandboards.com)

We dont have access to individual domains (.co.uk, .com.au etc) and would like to use only our current .com domain.

We're considering that we should use www.secondhandboards.com for the USA and concentrate on good backlinks from the USA for this domain.

For the UK, implementing a new URL www.secondhandboards.com/uk

However, we're not sure if this is correct - and we're worried that rankings will plummet in the UK if we do this.

    Any opinions welcomed!!

    Thanks for your time,

    Dave

If you can you should keep the .com for the uk and use .com/us for the usa

Its just confusing as someone else just told me - to NOT do that. He explains....

When you have backlinks from sites that are getting traffic from UK then your website will also get ranked for UK. Most of your backlinks are from sites that are targeting UK that's why the site in No#1 for UK. You have zero good backlinks from the USA and thats why it doesnt rank in the USA.

    Hi davidblackburn75

You should listen to Pierre about this... you can easily resolve and accomplish this using rel = alternate,, hreflang tags, and rel = canonical tags.

Proper use of canonical, alternate and hreflang tags will easily resolve your issues. Who ever told you otherwise is wrong !
