Angry **HELP - Ecommerce Pages/Filters Are Ranking

    Hi,

I have started working on a website that has a few issues, it is an ecommerce site with a lot of products.

One thing I have noticed quite that is quite bad is that whenever you go to a second page and/or add any product filter or sorting parameters it creates a new URL.

    For instance:

Say if I am on a category the URL would so as such: website.com/category-one

But when I am messing around with filters and sorting the URLs will show as below...

I am being told that changing the backend/system is not an option.

    website.com/category-one/page/2w

    website.com/category-one/brand/nike

    website.com/category-one/sort-by/price/sort-direction/asc

    website.com/category-one/show/36

    website.com/category-one/brand/umbro/sort-by/name/sort-direction/asc/show/36

THESE ARE RANKING IN THE SEARCH!

I have submitted a disavow in the robots.txt for just the /page/ parameter and i have noticed the number of ranking URLs (using the search query allinurl:page site:website.com) have decreased slowly from 360 to 310 in a few weeks... is this a slow process or is there a more immediate remedy.

If so will I just have to add more disavows to the robot.txt file??

    Help please

This sounds like and excuse! But I'm guessing it's not run with wordpress/woo-commerce!

...Assuming you mean disallows (not disavows - that's not connected to robots.txt)...
Adding a disallow in robots.txt stops google from crawling the url, but not from ranking it, so there will always be a vulnerability.

If the system really can't be changed, then the correct way to de-rank a duplicate page of this nature would be either:
A: Add a canonical tag to the duplicates (citing the originals as the canonical url)... OR...
B: Add a robots meta "noindex" tag to the duplicate pages (to stop google from indexing) and remove from robots.txt (to allow page to be crawled and tag seen)!

Yes sorry disallow! No it is with magento

I believe it is already no indexed as this is on the page source:

    <meta name="robots" content="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW"/>

Could you provide a link to your site just add a space before the extension. So we can take a look at it.

In that case the page should not be indexed... (If it is, it can only be because the url is disallowed in robots.txt so google can't crawl it and see the tag).

Like Pierre says, if you want us to take a look paste the domain and one or two of the problem urls and we can take a peek

The best place to learn it is: Google: Use canonical URLs
