Question Will MSN SEO Heaven Last?
I don't mean to spoil anyone's hopes. I'm getting the greatest ranking ever on MSN Search Beta myself. It seems that the concept of relevance behind this new SE is based on all the factors we SEOs are best at optimizing.

I just want to know if you think this will last. If it does, and msn gains popularity against G & Y! it could mean a lot to the SEO industry, given the fact that Google gets tougher every day.

Assume that nothing lasts - algos change all the time. So, plan on enjoying it for however long it lasts, and hope that when it changes, you can adjust with the changes as well. If you make a bundle in the first 30 days of it going live, for example, don't assume the bundle will continue. Invest that bundle wisely, and if the joy ride lasts longer - consider it a bonus!

MSN Search beta is rocken. Reminds me of the days of AltaVista, but with extra perks like NEAR ME search which is great.

I'd like to see more deep crawling from a top level domain on it though. I've not seen my domains crawled completely yet.

I don't think it will change (or dance) too much. That was for the tech previews. Now I think they're just tightening things up. I mean, they're a couple of weeks away from launching! (hopefully)

I am assuming that my rankings will disappear by the time the site goes live, and that competition will be fierce. Thus, anything above that expectation works for me.

Expect the number of sites returned to jump [more competition]
Expect more SEOs to focus on MSN and the driving forces behind it [more competition]
Expect filters that don't currently exist [more analysis needed]

Expect the worst and then work like mad to avoid that...you'll enjoy the surprise.

MSN currently delivers about 10% of my search traffic. I imagine they will turn on the Microsoft marketing machine to increase usage once Beta goes live. Then we will see.

Until google drops in traffic most of my effort goes into better serps for google. MSN and yahoo are gifts.

To get back to the original question, I have always had the theory that this is not actually a beta at all. It is the bare bones of the MSN algo and is a classic Microsoft form of PR (Public Relations that is).

Behind the scenes they are testing their different filters which they plan to phase in slowly after launch.

Why you ask? How do you build up the buzz on a search engine? You deliver a beta (the majority of web surfers don't even know there is a beta or what that means) that is tailored to those who post to forums in droves - SEO's and those who employ SEO techniques themselves.

I think we will see a much different MSN after the launch so enjoy while it lasts. Just my humble opinion of course.

So your theory is that MSN Beta is designed to make SEOs happy, and it will be completely different once it goes live.

I think that is a little extreme, though I recognize it's a little too good to be true now.

What would be the reason for MSN to tease SEOs this way? MSN Search is not going to be more visited just because we like it.

As you put it yourself: the people that define the success of a SE don't use betas and don't post in forums

Interesting theory, more and more search engines are appeasing the SEO to market their search engine. Yahoo might be doing this the most noticeably. Google does it as well, but they have a line in the sand. Ask Jeeves, well they are missing the boat.

If your MSN theory is right, then kudos to them.

Regarding the MSN SEO Heaven, I too expect the results to change over time. How much time? Who knows.
