Steve Balmer determined to beat Google and Linux :-x

http://www.boston.com/business/tech...allenge_google/

An ebullient Steve Ballmer, president and chief executive of Microsoft Corp., said yesterday that his company is "hell-bent and determined" to challenge Google Inc. for leadership in the Internet search business.

"It'll be a lot of fun for the rest of you to watch," Ballmer shouted to the delight of several hundred guests at a meeting of the Massachusetts Software Council in Boston

Microsoft is as directed and competitive as any company out there. Over time they will give Google a run for the money. Others may also. Meanwhile they are facing competition on one of their cash cows from Linux and are fighting it tooth and nail. We will see. I wish their was a generally accepted competitor to their office suites and office applications. It would contribute to making them less dominant in each area they enter.

For now though they have a long way to go. I am astounded at how they dominate in browsers and yet provide very little search traffic. They don't leak searchers...they have a big sieve. On the other hand we have a #1 position in MSN for 1 important term...and yesterday when speaking to a recent sale, who found us on the web...they said more or less "I was looking for your service and did a Microsoft search."

Gotta cover the bases on all SEs.

Dave

Send a message via MSN to balthazar
I have several relatives that work for microsoft and they are very proud of their company and it's ability to stay ahead and challenge those on top. This makes for good business. I really like the new results from MSN. I hope they continue to work on it.

Plus the new OS is supposed to offer built in search. "Can you say anti-trust suite again?"

The way MSN has been spidering my sites, I'm all for the increased competition -- it gets more and more people using search, which gives us $$$ minded SEOs more $$$.

Balthazar, the beauty of the anti-trust on built in search is that to a degree it already exists and has passed scrutiny...plus, by the time it got to trial, some of the smaller guys, like Copernic, will have already been pushed out.

Cygnus (disclosure: I bought some more MSFT stock this week)

All this Microsoft stuff make me laugh, i'd hate to be in America (lovely country dont get me wrong) but over there you can be sued for being a competitor and "overpricing" your products. Yes, Microsoft prices are well high, but it should be Microsoft choice, if they are so expensive and people cant afford, they just lose out on customers, I cant pop down to the Ferrari show room and sue them for over pricing their cars can I?
The only way i'd thought you could do over pricing is if you charged one place say $100 and another state $300, disrimination pricing, which is still legal anyway, people normally do it on their websites.

I mean this IE with Windows and now WMP with windows problems is pathetic. How happy would you be to go out and buy windows, have to download IE, WMP, movie maker, defrag, wordpad, notepad, calc~, magnifier, all the games, fonts, etc. and then have to wait ages to download these huge patches!! Not going to work, everyone will be commiting suicide with 56k modems!!

and Linux...i got it with several CDs full of programs, most made with the same people as the linux OS, and it wasn't FREE, cost me £30, bit different to the price of windows i know but beside the point... You say those programs are free and GPL? Well WMP may not be GPL but its FREE....

Microsoft actually fund Linux alot...why?

Notice windows is now only used on 90% the worlds PCs not 98% or 95% no more?

A plan to get the commissions of their back v. clever, and as its all stock, Microsoft wins again because they own a share of the company

I do agree... It looks like Portugal, with the ISP's using ADSL lines... There is one ISP from the group Portugal Telecom that owns the telephone lines in Portugal, other ISP's are arguing 'cause it isn't competitive... Why don't they build their own lines? If this was USA maybe Portugal Telecom was obligated to give away their lines...

C'mon, everybody talks about Microsoft, everyone says that Microsoft sucks, but everyone use Windows since Win 95 or 3.1!

Want to be an alternative geek? Go ahead and use Linux, Unix or whatever...

If I can drive a Koenigsegg why the hell should I be driving a Volkswagen???

No one needs to use Microsoft products, they don't point a gun at your head...

Seeing what i'm seeing, Microsoft will have a nice share of the market with MSN Search!
