So called MSN ban

I have seen posts in several forums about MSN dropping sites over night. Sites going from top 10 to gone. I didn't think much of it till recently they dumped a site I have been working on. It is just a temporary glitch in the algo and I will have this site back in a week? Is it a ban? I don't know why the site would get banned. Any ideas?

I've never been to fond of msn. But I've recently joined some MSN optimization contest (for fun, not for the profit) and I must say that I am actually learning a thing or two in the proces.

I've posted something about the power of sitewide links a few minutes ago and I've also already witnessed the phenomenon you're describing here.

Currently my site ranks 6th or 7th, but it's a strange process. I entered at #5, the next day my site was nowhere to be found to pop back in the day after at #3. The next two days I was in nowhereland again to get back at #5 the day after. It is going on like this since the beginning. I've talked about this with a few others who have experienced this same effect.

I can't really say why this is happening, it's subject to a few sites only as far as I can see 'till now but it is happening. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Most likely your site will be back within a week. I don't think it's a ban, I've done some crazy things but never managed to get banned.

I have a similar situation. I have a site that had several #1 results in MSN up until about a few months or more ago. Im not sure what happened, but take a look at this graph from Marketleap.com (one of my favorite tools).

This is the indexed pages graph for MSN only.

First of all, I never had 3500 pages. Ever. I have always had 500 - 600 pages.

See that sharp drop at the end of June? Thats when my MSN traffic started dropping fast from 100+ unique visits per day down to only a few. So Im not banned, but for some reason all my pages were de-indexed.

If you look closely at the end, you'll see that Ive gone up about 50. Yesterday it was like 150 and today its 200. Maybe things are going back up?

Another strange thing is that when you do site:www.mydomain.com, it does say 200 results, but when you get to the 7th or so page of results, the number jumps to 766. Strange

Jammer, I read your post about site-wide links. Very good info. I really hope that this site will be back in the top within a week or less time. Thanks for the insite.

Mmmm, I don't know much about the tools you're using, but I'd certainly like to know the url.

Personally, I've had problems with MSN, but not the same ones. My problems come when a site drops out to #2 - that tends to be temporary, but I'm working on understanding why this happens.

It's a kick in the shins!

Gladly.

http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/default.htm

they have an indexed pages tool and a link popularity/ backlinks tool. You must use it a few times before you can get the trend graph.

Best part is that its free. Enjoy

I have the same happening to one of my sites on msn. I was ranking #1 - dropped, ranked again, and dropped again. It's been a week since that happend, and I'm still dropped for those keywords.

Another thing I've noticed, just before this whole jumping around the SERPs began, MSN stopped showing my site Title and URL - It was positioned the same, only with the URL displayed.

Is this a ban, or is it just the same stuff as you guys experience?

I had such high hopes for the "new" MSN Search. I thought it got off to a good start, too. But it seems to be laden with issues like the others.

What is it with these wacky SEs?

I think the drop could be due to an update because the site is back for many keywords again.

Yeah, I've had the same thing happen. Used to be #1 for my keyword phrase and now, all of a sudden, I'm completely gone. I noticed that several of my competitors have also been dropped, so I'm assuming this is part of an update.
Still, it's kind of frustrating...

The site is gone today, but I am sure it will be back tomorrow. Can't wait for this update to be done.
