Quick first glance at serps in MSN beta
Did a quick glance at some of my most important keywords. MSN beta seems to be showing the following at the top of the SERPs; URL =keyword1keyword2; After that URL = keyword1keyword2something else;URL = keyword1-keyword2 is high but not as high as keyword1keyword2.
This is a very abbreviated look. What do you see? Dave Last edited by earlpearl : November 12th, 2004 at 10:23 AM. |

I am seeing the same results for our targeted keywords.
URL home page name & content seem to be the heavy weights in the Beta version. Of the keyphrases I searched, it wasn't until 40+ that I would encounter the first none home page. Many PR3s with high KW density placing above PR5-6 Even saw a keyphrase laden, PR0 site above wal mart. No additional intelligence + an MS style push = another domain name feeding frenzy. (i grabbed mine yesterday ) |

Something right in my past life
No 1 for my Key, Keyphrase!in the "Beta". Must have done something right in my past life to deserve this without doing anything or to know what to do...
I do flip between 1st and 2nd in the existing MSN SEPPs raz

Yay! I'm #16 in MSN Beta for the keyphrase i've been working my butt off for, and #115 in G.
Boy, i hope MSN gets a bigger chunck of the SE traffic... BTW, does anyone know the breakdown? I know google is still #1 with 40% of all the searches (i think).

We were doing as well in the new MSN search as in Google, but with the beta we are now about one page behind the Google SERPs on MSN.
With G doubling their pages I now have #1 and #2 out of 16,500,000 pages. What is really weird is that the #2 is our custom 404 page. Go figure.

What do I see? I see that Google can continue to kiss my ***.
I rank outrageously well in most of the top niche markets, including but not limited to travel, online dating, online casinos and various stock market/day trading terms. Not only do I rank well, I rank well for the top keywords for these markets, sometimes #1 and sometimes top 20-30 for keywords I'm not even targeting hard. Whereas I rank nowhere in Google. True, it's my fault, I refuse to buy into the Google "he who has the most links wins" idiocy, but still. Not only that, but last night, not long after it went beta, I got my first hit from it to my travel site, for airline tickets, which I rank 29th for. I knew that from the alpha preview, but was shocked I was already seeing something from the beta. Since then I've seen a few scattered hits from it to a variety of my sites, and I certainly hope it only progresses and MSN goes public in the very near future. Maybe I can make more money, instead of spending more money advertising because Google won't rant me for a freaking thing across 10 sites. |

Gosh, my links and image alt text stuff must be great on my custom 404 (not a one backlink and it is a PR0). I did not put a "no index, no follow" on the custom 404. I forgot to, but if I do now, I will give up the #2 I just add another competitor to the first page. Point of the above being is that Google in now including garbage pages that have no BLs, 0 PR, no content, etc. and ranking it #2 out of 15 million pages. Competition is making them go sideways. ![]() |

I looked at it harder for a couple of my keyword phrases. for main kwphrase
msn beta serps lean heavily toward url = keyword1keyword2 or keyword1keyword2something else. we rank well at keyword1-keyword2. Big reversal from google where #of bls and allinanchor are big indicators of rankings. The sites at the top in google drop dramatically in msn beta serps. The main keyword phrase is singular; a 2nd important phrase is keyword1 keyword2(plural). The sites at the top in google for the main phrase (which have multiple sites) show well in these serps. For a third variation; (differentkeyword1) keyword2. Number 1 is a site with that as its url. That site is about 15th in google for that keyword phrase. Also I see very few directories in the first couple of pages of serps for any of these keyword phrases. Google's serps on the other hand have a bunch of directories for all 3 phrases. My quick observation is that it MSN serps seems to be url and title oriented. Inner pages with the appropriate url are being picked up. BTW the MSN beta link: tool is terrific. They of course are far more thorough and they are picking up some new links from this week. Google has to be seeing these same links, they just don't let us know...or they aren't giving them much weight. On the other hand if MSN Beta isn't giving bls much weight why not show em all. I'm #1 for a very important 2 word key phrase on the MSN beta and #485 on Google. I'm in the top 10 on Yahoo!

I don't think we should put to much weight on what we see yet, but more as something it's worth watching. Ex. if I search only for words in my language I also get results from Germany and some other languages also.
But what I see is that for one keyword I watch I'm on first page on new MSN, and page 12 at Google. I have to admit I like that. I would say that many of those I see in MSN are more representativ than in Google. (And the good thing about Google is that a main competitor which has been holding 2nd spot for ages now are gone. Not banned, but down to page 5 with his inner page. His main page is gone. I know he likes to cheat so I'm happy. I prefer to be beaten by "honest" websites.) But what I think is a good SER isn't better on all search in MSN (no, it's not the same as I'm on first page), I also see some crap. What I see that is the same as earlpearl is that all on page one has the keyword in their title, but not so many have it in their url. (But I also rank #1 on one keyword where I have it in the url). Title is important, but I'm not so sure about url yet. Could it be other things?

It's hard to say. The phrase I hold the #1 spot with , out of 770k, is not in my title or domain name/URL. It is in the meta description once, keywords once and on the body of the page once.
