MSN Techpreview serps "truncated"
ALERT!
techpreview.search.msn.com has already made changes to the serps, possibly to limit its usability for SEOers. Now - on a regular search, it always returns less then a serpfull of results. For example: "Results 1-5 of about 120,917". What's with that!? ![]() What really bugs me is that same same goes for the link: command. Although the number of hits is displayed as usual, only the first couple of hits are actually shown. <sob> </buzz> Last edited by Wit : October 13th, 2004 at 06:07 PM. What do you mean Wit? I did a search on my category which showed same volume of pages (over 2 million). Bad news is a week ago we were #1 now we are #5. Glad this is still hidden!

Sorry to cry wolf like that. I should have made a snapshot ;) (and maybe post earlier hehe).
Every search I did half an hour ago rendered less than 10 actual results. The number showing the "total number of results" was the same as always (i.e. large) but each time I got about 5, 6 or 7 results on the serp. The rest was simply left out, and there was no "next" button to click. Eerie. Anyway, it's back to normal now (whatever that is), but my guess is that we may be getting more tweaks and funny tests like this one, in the near future. What's more: it's evidently a test of some kind by MSN and NOT a bad cookie on my computer (because I didn't remove any and the phenomenon has disappeared for now). Talking about bad cookies... Surely the ranking bit is not Bill's fault directly ;) Last edited by Wit : October 13th, 2004 at 06:41 PM. Reason: my techpreview serps have shifted since though... |

It is a good place to go and check your backlinks. It shows almost all back links as opposed to google or yahoo.

Yeah, I know, that why I wanted to know if this was worldwide and/or persistent behaviour... All of a sudden it only showed 5 of my backlinks. Well, back to normal at the moment.
{just checking again} Yes. Phew. BTW - they experimented with a banner (MS ad) too, yesterday. They took that off pretty quick. Bet they got a lot of "feedback" on that. ;) Last edited by Wit : October 14th, 2004 at 02:35 AM. Reason: I just read another witness' post. At least I'm not losing my mind ;) |
