MSN Must Love Blogs...
I almost can't post to my Blog without ending up on the first page of MSN's SERPs within a day... And the only reason I know is because I'm getting traffic in my logs.
The content they are picking up is fresh... I'll usually post as soon as I see something related to my Blog happen in the news or around the internet. I suppose it makes sense, but I know Google or Yahoo doesn't offer up traffic or rankings like that... I find it especially unique being this site is only 2 months old. Does anyone else have this experience with MSN? |

Hi MCS,
A Blog is essentially an online journal. BUT the content is on a website... You post about whatever you want. Kind of like posting here... There are literally millions of Blogs on the internet. They take many different shapes and forms... The software I use is WordPress.org. I host it on my own website... BUT their are also free ones out there like Blogger.com (owned by Google)... I Blog possesses many benefits. First they are easy to set up... You could literally be blogging in minutes from now. Second it acts as a CMS (content management system). You don't have to upload anything or use FTP. You simply post like we do here... The information is automatically organized for you. Some are highly customizable like WordPress... where you actually could use it simply as a CMS if you wanted and modify it to do many, many things... The possiblities are limitless... The other perk is that you can ping.... You hook it up with a service like PingOMatic.com and it will let dozens of services know you've updated your site and increases traffic to your blog. Essentially it helps draw the SEs to you... That's why mine gets indexed so fast. I ping and the search engine crawls another site and follows my link back to me! Also you can allow RSS feeds.... So that's basically it... there is a lot more to it, but that's the jist. They are the rage because of the quick indexing and also the can be monetized with Adsense or affiliate marketing or ? The skies the limit. Here a link to mine if your curious what one looks like: http://Blog.iiiBusiness.com/ Hope that answered your question. Kind of hard to sum it up in one post. ________ Matt Levenhagen |

So now that you know what blogs are, here is a look at how they are important for a companies overall marketing campaign.
Blogs If you have a blog, it allows a company to interact with its clients and share with them new idea and customer support. From my marketing perspective, I love the idea! (take a look at the Godaddy.com blog) - Regarding being indexed and having links, yes this will help. Blogs are simple, typically dont have many pictures, and a full of content. For this reason, they are easily scanned by robots and can gain a high rank in google. Take a look at some of the results of different keywords and you'll see plenty of blogs in the top 10 and top 20. - One of the important things for backlinking is having good anchor text within relevant content. IF you can incorporate links back to your business within content related to your business, you are accomplishing one of the best ways to backlink. -You can also have plenty of keywords being targeted through your blogs. -Scott Fish |

While it is neat to see blogs helping out a lot of SEOs, please remember that it is likely temporary. When I first got into the business, I felt that meta keywords were a great thing because one could tell the engine what your page was about and they'd rank it accordingly...naturally abuse shortly followed and we moved more towards on-page content, then links, and all the fine tuning that occurs throuh such evolution. More than likely blogs will rank well for a short while, but when the engines look at the relevancy of the search start to decline (don't really know when), then the importance associated with blogs will begin to fade.
What am I getting at? Aside from the bottom of a 2 liter of diet coke, the point is that while powerful, blogs should only be a small piece of the overall SEM picture. Congrats on the success though; the small ones can sometimes be the best ones. Cygnus

Also.. search engines like content, it has nothing to do with blogs per say. Its just the nature of a blog and how it works that fits a predefined style that search engines like... Google, MSN, and Yahoo love.
Fresh content + One way links = Nice ranking!

Ping in the Blog sense...
Quote:
Each time your blog pings, your post is picked up by these services that will list a link to your site... A search engine will then come along and follow that to your Blog and index you. This doesn't guarantee traffic... you do have to Blog about something that someone might query about. Still need the right keywords. Blogger actually pings WebLogs. Goto: Settings/Publishing/Choose Yes to Notify Weblogs.com/Save Settings... That's it! Now it will ping each time you post. ________ Matt Levenhagen |

yeah, I think the key is here is not blog, but fresh content. You could just easily accomplish this will static pages added to your site with an updated list of pages added on your home page.

Here is my hand coded site's stats for a site that is a little bit older then yours. I make a 'post/page' once a week, and dig around the net for a couple hours a week looking for some links. I spend a little bit less then 2 hours a week on it.
Inktomi Slurp 1242 June 6 2005 - 22:59 MSNBot 246 June 6 2005 - 22:58 Googlebot 128 June 6 2005 - 21:45 And 18 other bots that Im not listing. PS... Right around 17,000 Uniques a month at this point. Just a little content + some links and you can rock and roll in any shape or form! Last edited by l3vi : June 7th, 2005 at 01:54 AM. |
