MSN likes inner page more than home page

I sell "Blue Widgets" and my home page has always been #28 to #38 on MSN. It's #10 on Yahoo & #160 on Google.

Two weeks ago, MSN started showing one of my inner product pages "Men's Blue Widgets" instead of my homepage at position #35 when searching for "Blue Widgets".

My homepage is better optimized for "Blue Widgets" than the inner page. It is not banned, it shows up when I search on specific phrases it contains. No new aquired links in last three months.

The inner page has very few inbound links compared to my homepage. The menu structure is the same. It has less text, and mostly photos of my products.

Possible reasons I can think of:

1. The inner page was updated more recently than the homepage.

2. The homepage has higher keyword density (but within the ranges of my higher-ranking competitors).

3. Perhaps MSN changed their algo regarding title and now sees inner page title (which is shorter) as more relevant. However, my competitors have rather long homepage titles.

Has this happened to anyone? Any reasons you can think of?

Ed

I've seen the exact opposite....ranking for everything w/ my top page, even if better inner-pages are optimized.

MSN is not as stable as Google - especially for newer pages.

Could it be a relavancy of backlinks issue? Your internal pages are most likely only linked to by your own pages which should be relevant, while your home page probably has links from many pages which are not relevant.
