junk/garbage in msn cache...why?
Has anyone come across MSN displaying junk for the description in a listing?
Do a search for site:statecollege.com and you'll see what I mean. Any guesses what might cause this? edit: To doublecheck it wasn't anything to do specifically with that web host, I searched for a string contained in the junk and found a whole bunch of other sites that also display junk in the SERPs. I found this site (h t t p ://www.seoconsultants.com/articles/1000/http-compression.asp) which checks to see if a site is using http compression and checked all the results with junk in them and it seems 99% of them do use http compression. I hope your cache refreshes regularly, because that sure looks silly. Remember it can be a glitch on THEIR side or YOURS. For example a gzip module on your server malfunctioning, causing un-unzipped stuff to be displayed... I'm not saying that's it, but you know, things like that happen now and again.
It doesn't seem to be date-related. Rather random... Sorry, still puzzled...

Yes it's rather random indeed. If there was a problem with the gzip module, then that problem also exists on multiple other sites, perhaps indicating a bug in the gzip module? Although why doesn't this problem appear in any other engine? Weird. Here's some more info: I downloaded the index page of one of the affected sites using wget, then zipped it and opened the file in notepad. There was a common string at the beginning of the file and the msn search results, but the rest didn't match - which could be because the algos are different between gzip and winzip and/or the contents of the page had changed between when it was spidered and when I downloaded it. I've sent a note to MSN about it and will post back with more info if anyone is interested. |

MSN responded with a generic "it's been passed to our engineers" type response.

Now I receive this annoying generic response which is totally off the mark. Either they didn't read my email, or maybe they just didn't understand it and threw this back at me to make me go away. Quote:
After I responded to this email I received a customer satisfaction survey, which I promptly filled out. You can probably guess the ratings I gave them. |
