Lightbulb If Msn Would Only Buy Alltheweb !!!

It is not hard to understand why Micosoft would have wanted to buy GOOGLE

But - just think how much it could have done for ALLTHEWEB

If it had more relevant SERPs it would be a close competitor to Google - considering all the features it offers...

Micosoft could have really added and invested alot - in fact ALLTHEWEB's SERPs are somewhat better than INKTOMI's...

Well, AllTheWeb is owned by Yahoo, which also owns inktomi, altavista and overture.

I agree that AllTheWeb is a better engine than Inktomi... I guess we'll have to wait and see what MSN come up with.

And They have been testing... Msnbot has been to my site recently... And it sounds like msn is going to try some new things.

Here's my take on this:

MSN will be able to pull off some good traffic and promotion, but I don't think they will be able to achieve better serps, and here's why:

When Sergey & what's his face developed the Google technology, they did it as a hobby. All of these guys are doing it as a business idea. I don't think that was the prime objective of those Stanford boys - they just loved what they were doing and they put their heart and soul into it. When you do something as a hobby it is always done in much better quality.

Unless Yahoo & MSN start letting some people in there that are passionate about search (and not just programming it for the sake of a paycheck) then the results will never be as good as Google.

How can you find someone that's passionate about search? Offer them minimum wage (or close to), if they're still keen after the offer, they're your guys - then reward them with a very attractive salary (Wouldn't want someone who really is passionate about their job to become stressed or unhappy!!).

Analyzing - the new MSN Search Engine - Preview
- If MSN would only buy AllTheWeb and Invest & Tweak it's
relevancy - they would fare much better.

The relevancy of The new MSN is less - so - than AlltheWeb

It seems that keyword - body text - density is highly factored up to a percentage. But, link popularity is not a priority in their Algorithmic Rankings

Titles are important (obviously) - However - keyword order in the title tag is not weight as heavily as Google

Ironically - while there is a common denominator in all the Major Search Engines SERPs, MSN (preview) seems to have the most independant SERPs of Any of them.

Interestingly - AllTheWeb - shows a similar propensity in it's Algorithmic SERPs - it is the percentage - that these variables are weighted that makes the difference in relevancy.

Alltheweb is powered by Unix ... primary Linux.

For Microsoft to migrate to Windows from Unix would likely have cost more than the two or three years of (15 - 20 developers) development time would have bought. They can without a doubt throw 150 people at the project and cover in 6 months what ATW accompished in 4.

IMHO (-;

Thumbs down Microsoft Search in the News Again

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/busin...html?source=rss

Quote:
A Kirkland man arrested last week on allegations that he stole proprietary technology from the AltaVista search engine two years ago is a Microsoft Corp. employee who has been working on the Redmond company's MSN Search initiative.

Federal authorities allege that Laurent Chavet, a former AltaVista employee, illegally accessed the California company's computer system in March 2002 and June 2002, after he left AltaVista and well before he went to work for Microsoft. Chavet, then living in California, copied to his home computer source code that was used by AltaVista "to perform the function of scouring the World Wide Web," according to an FBI affidavit.

However, three other people with knowledge of Chavet's Microsoft employment confirmed that he has been working on the MSN Search effort. A brief biography attached to a paper Chavet co-wrote on text analytics described him as an expert "in all aspects of search technology." He worked at IBM's Almaden Research Center after leaving AltaVista and before joining Microsoft.

Quote:
SEATTLE -- A man charged with hacking into an Internet search company's computers to steal secrets in 2002 now works on search engine development for Microsoft Corp., the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Friday.

Microsoft officials confirmed on Thursday that Laurent Chavet works for the company. While they would not specify his assignment, three others with knowledge of his work told the newspaper he is part of the MSN Search team.

In a brief biography with a paper on text analytics co-written by Chavet, 31, of Kirkland, he is described as an expert "in all aspects of search technology."

According to an indictment issued in U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Chavet illegally accessed the AltaVista computer system in March and June of 2002 after he left that company to work at IBM's Almaden Research Center in San Jose, Calif., and before he joined Microsoft.

Living in California at the time, he copied from home the source code used by AltaVista for "scouring the World Wide Web," according to an FBI affidavit.

The main similarity is the simplicity of interface, and this simplicity IMO is essential for success of any SE.
