Correct code and MSN
Is it only me or does MSN (and to an extent yahoo) but much more weight into correct code than google?

Yes, I see MSN rewarding good clean code nicely. I think Yahoo! does the same but not with the same intensity. Google... hmm ... since even their homepage isn't w3 compliant maybe that's why they don't care too much about it.

No. Google don't seem to care. I have a site that im working on correcting now that ranks well in google and has a staggering 173 errors on the first page alone.
Needless to say it doesn't rank for squat in MSN or Yahoo. |

rmccarley,
I didn't check google.com with the w3 validator lately, but probably after someone posted on this forum about the fact that not even their main site isn't w3 compliant they got it compliant. There is a thread around here about it if you want to check it out |

I think clean coded sites do well in MSN because their algorithm being quite new isn't so "weather beaten" as other SEs' algorithms when it comes to reading code. So, maybe the MSN staff thought to something very simple yet not so well taken care of fact: spammers don't validate their pages, just throw them on the web, thousands and thousands and then wait for the $ to come in. |

Many spammers use scraper programs that output valid code so you can't really go by that.
Anyway, when asked about many factors that affect rank, the MSN team was very forthcoming - almost shockingly so. When asked about W3C validation, their answer was "no comment". http://www.seomoz.org/articles/msn-search-interview.php MS is a member of the W3C. It would make sense. But that doesn't make it so. |

Huh ... I have never used such programs so honestly I didn't know they can output valid code ( spammy pages ). Maybe I should give them a try

Hi,
It makes sense that MSN engineers would prefer clean code, because they are first and foremost a software company - it's in their mindset. I'm only suprised that there aren't little security patches, and service packs that we need to install when using MSN search.... Cheers, SP. |
