being top3 for keywords with about 500.000.000 competiting sites in MSN

Hello,

I am kinda confused and would appreciate any "help" Since about 2 days I seem to be ranked with one of my pages in MSN top3 for keywords and keyword combinations with about 500 Mill competiting sites. Now that is fine for me ;) but I really wonder, how this could be happen, since that happened on a page, that I did absolutely NO SEO, that hardly has any content and that is online only since 2 months.

The even stranger part is, that by MSN I receive only about 200-300 uniques a day, even though as mentioned I am top 3 for highly competitive terms (terms that have e.g. 800.000 Overture hits in keyword suggestion tool), so I really wonder, wether msn is used that little? Since if I would be same ranked on google for such a term I would receive several tenthousands uniques a day for that ranking...

thx in advance, seochat

I would try placing "FREE BEER" in the title tag.

LOL, it most deffinetely will help to bring another 50 uniques per day! But seriously you should not be looking at that number. They are having some problems with displaying correct numbers (according to randfish). The traffic however is very bad and according to my stats has been constantly dropping since they came out. Unfortunately the results are far from being relevant and this is a major drawback.

EGOL agrees: VERY GOOD POINT! MSN numbers are highly inflated.

yep but the terms I am referring to are high traffic terms (as mentioned 800.000 overture search queries each month - some of the terms I am topranked in even break the 1 mill mark overture search queries a month). So that is what I wondered: If these terms are searched in overture network summed up several millions times a month, so to say hundred thousand times a day how come that I get that little traffic from MSN. What I mean is according to that MSN should pass on only about 1:10000 of the traffic that whole overture passes on?

best regards, seochat

Yes, I am referring to highly searched terms as well. The key phrase I target there are 1.6Mil searches every month as reported by Overture. But don;t forget that Overture only reports stats for its network and M is not a part of it. From M I get about 300 uniques per day in 2nd position. When M came out I was 1st-2nd and was getting 500 uniques per day. Compare to 200 uniques I get from G in 15th position and about 120 uniques from Y in 13th position. These are the total numbers however and they include the key phrase I target as well as non-competitive terms but percentage-wise its more or less the same.

thx for the info, faremax. So it seems that my stats are not unusual and MSN is really bad in producing much traffic even with top ranks at highly searched terms...

best regards, seochat

I was just about to post a very similar story. One of my competitors has setup a very very simplistic website, just text, a rolling text banner and 1 page of content in English Dutch and French. In fact is is so unproffesionaly done that I would be embarresed if it where mine. This site is just about 1 month old and it outranks (msn) just about any other proffesionally designed seo and non seo sites for a highly searched word ('botox' in Belgium).
Seems very strange to me because I always thought that a new site would have to 'grow' through time to get respect from the search engines.

So maybe we just through out all of the fancy stuff on our websites and go back to the basics ... plain old text, no pics, no structure ?
