    Does adding a mobile sitemap help?

    I've read about adding a mobile sitemap. Can it help? Will ranking or traffic be better with a mobile sitemap? I know how important sitemap can be in terms of indexing and crawling of search engines. I am open to adding a mobile sitemap for optimization, but I am not sure about this.

    Mobile site map

    If you have a mobile site, it’s good that you can submit two site maps to Google, one for desktop and one for mobile.

    Suppose if your website pages having this format,

    example.com/page-1
    and the corresponding mobile URL is m.example.com/page-1

    Then you can submit two site maps individually.

    According to Google, they recommend using the following annotations: (Using only 1 sitemap for desktop and mobile version combinely)

    • On the desktop page, add a special link rel=”alternate” tag pointing to the corresponding mobile URL. This helps Googlebot discover the location of your site’s mobile pages.

    • On the mobile page, add a link rel=”canonical” tag pointing to the corresponding desktop URL.

    On the desktop page (example.com/page-1), add:

    <link rel="alternate" media="only screen and (max-width: 640px)"
    href="http://m.example.com/page-1" >

    and on the mobile page (m.example.com/page-1), the required annotation should be:

    <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/page-1" >

    This rel=”canonical” tag on the mobile URL pointing to the desktop page is required.

    Annotation in sitemaps

    We support including the rel=”alternate” annotation for the desktop pages in sitemaps like this:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9"
    xmlnshtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <url>
    <loc>http://www.example.com/page-1/</loc>
    <xhtml:link
    rel="alternate"
    media="only screen and (max-width: 640px)"
    href="http://m.example.com/page-1" />
    </url>
    </urlset>

    The required rel=”canonical” tag on the mobile URL should still be added to the mobile page’s HTML.

    Note- [According to Google Webmaster Guidelines]

    This is extremely interesting for me.

    I'm currently improving my webpage usability, and I'm considering exactly this for the next month's improvements.

    Thank you for pointing us in the right direction.

    If you have a responseive website, then just use normal XML sitemaps. If you have separate versions, the question is a bit harder since mobile sitemaps were originally meant for feature phones and not smart phones (that have he same capabilities as desktop computers) - see his http://www.microsystools.com/product...-xml-sitemaps/
