I was wondering if anyone tried combining 2 categories into one. For example for a medical clinic if you go with their general practitioner suggested category you wont be recognized for doctor or physician. Has anyone tried forming their own category, for example "Doctor and Physician"? Would this work?

You can select more than one category - I generally use category names that fit what people would actually type in, regardless of what is suggested.

I've also read that by using single keywords as your categories, you'll see more combinations of the words than if you use multiple word categories... but I've never personally tested - might be worth checking out.

BTW - moved your thread to the "local search techniques" forum - it's more relevant, and you're likely to find more info here about categories.

Cheers mate.

You CAN create custom categories, but you want them to be ones people search for. No one searches for "Doctor and Physician".

You can have 5 main categories and 4 of those can be custom categories. Then you can add more custom categories down in the additional details section, but keywords don't usually rank well down there unless they are very low competition so put your most important keywords in the main 5 cats.

Use the same keywords that you would for a organic campaign. The categories suggested are not always the most popular searches. Build the website from the keywords out and you should not have any question what to put in to Google places.

just like on other directories you can select different categories depends on your site niche or specialty..
