Why are newspaper ads so expensive compared to web sites?

I live in the Modesto, CA area. The Modesto Bee, the main paper here, puts out an 11" x 5" flier every week with several pages that each have 3 adds on each side. Each of those ads costs the advertiser $195/week and the paper says they have a waiting list. There's another 5" x 8" color flyer they'll insert in the paper dedicated to one business. The cost for that is $795/mo. My question is, why do businesses pay these prices for print advertising when they could put up web site with something like Jimdo for $10/mo, that has

    • more area to show your stuff
    • slide shows
    • animations
    • videos
    • audio
    • ability to change every day
    • ability to sell right off the page

I can think of a couple reasons, and maybe some other people here will have more thoughts.

First, the newspaper add is guaranteed to get delivered to a pair of eyes, while a web site might live forever in the cloud without anyone ever seeing it.

Second, for a lot people, (which probably includes most shop owners) suggesting that they build their own web site is like suggesting that they build a rocket and fly to the moon. Tools like Weebly and Jimdo make it easier but it's still a world away for them. And getting the web site seen by people is still another project that they know nothing about.

It seems like the web development community is doing a poor job when they let the print community walk away with all this money. I'm interested in any ideas people have for getting more people, people with no technical skills, onto the web.

    Thanks

when it comes down to what newspaper advertising has to offer, you would need to look at the different types of papers available (i.e. broadsheets, tabloids and Sunday papers) and how much it would cost to get your advert printed. If using newspaper advertising vs. Gourmet Ads, you will also need to be aware of the amount of readers that a specific newspaper gets and try and get information about how effective their advertising is. For example, find out how many sales were made as a direct link to newspaper advertising but in Website in that adverts can be displayed in the form of banner ads on a number of our associate sites. So unlike the case with newspaper advertising, with our network of websites, Gourmet Ads can target specific audiences with your advertising.

Because the newspaper is getting all it can before their extinct, their counting on local readers to keep them alive, but they won't last long...the internet killed them as well as phone directory advertising and other printed media, but you wouldn't know it by their pricing...the writing's on the wall, it's a new age. Their getting all they can before they need to look for a new job.

Printed newspapers, magazines, and books serve older adults... Once they are dead and gone and todays teens are the older adults, access to printed material will be minimal.

    • SEO_AM : In North America most paper & ink newspapers are out of existence or on their way to bankruptcy. Some are trying to survive by publishing online (most unsuccessful).

Newspaper ads cost alot, because the money pumped in for the printing is a alot; barring that the reach/ targeted audience of the newspaper are mostly adults; while on the web, the audience is comparatively younger.

Maybe these businesses pay these prices because they were able to see revenue from their previous advertisements. Or maybe, it's because they think that their possible clients are still subscribing to these newspapers. And also, maybe these businesses do not have their own web site YET because they still do not see its significance to their business. Or perhaps they want to take their time in investing in a good website.

Web Development Community should arrange explanations to these businessmen about the importance of websites in their online marketing campaign.

As for your second question indicated in your subject, Why are newspaper ads so expensive compared to web sites?

I agree with @vineetkumar, the money pumped in for the printing is a lot. And also because you are assured that your advertisements will really be seen by newspaper readers, unlike on the web with out any clear assurance of traffic to your website.

You have to be careful with some of the online sites as even if they're cheap, they might not be worthwhile.

However with the newspaper ads, not sure how effective those are anymore either with readership going down but I guess if it's one of the free community papers, maybe be worth looking into as the readership for those is probably still strong.

It's about a niche that local newspapers analyze, speculate and it's being done with investment and by wise people. Newspapers will always have buyers for their ads because there are classic readers who simply don't accept technology. When you want to get a fast job where you go online or local newspapers?

Gourmet Ads and other niche websites where you can target specific audience simply can't compare with local and national newspapers!
