Local SEO is a marketing strategy for any business trying to reach their consumer base or sell products locally to a specified geographical area.

    @rvitgroup:

Local SEO is the "local extension" of the organic SEO. Thus, the differences are not that many.

Here are the main specifics of local SEO:

    1. Targeting local customers
    2. Targeting keywords with location marker in them
    3. Optimizing based on the proximity of the searcher

Local search techniques would vary depending on the type of business:

    - restaurants or retail stores would get big advantage from services such as Google Places and Yelp
    - hotels from Google Places and Trip Advisor
    - service based businesses - mainly website optimization and sites such as City Search, Merchant Circle, etc
    - doctors, dentists, etc - Google Places, Demand Force, Vitals.com, Wellness.com, etc
    - lawyers - Google Places, website optimization, AVVO
    - photographers - website optimization, Google Places, Flickr
    - and so on...

The effect from local SEO is, as I mentioned above, primarily in getting higher organic ranking for local search, i.e. "keyword+location marker" or "keyword" (search performed by a person living nearby, or in the same town area).

    Hello,

These details are great, thanks! Can you recommend a tool that tracks Google Places results? (restaurant chain in a lot of Google Places )

    Hi,

In today's competitive environment, having a online presence is becoming a necessity for every company. Local SEO opened up a new wave of opportunity for those small businesses and service providers who don’t have the budget to launch a full scale online or offline marketing campaign.

Can you explain what "targetting keywords with location marker in them" means?

    Hi Steve,

I'm not sure what kind of results you mean, but there is a great tool from Bright Local that is tracking the local search rankings.

You can see it at brightlocal.com

    Hi Brandon,

Keywords with location marker are such as "carpet cleaning Miami". Miami is the location marker in this case.
