    Local City Landing Pages

I have a question that I hope someone might be able to answer. I have spend hours coming up with unique content for city landing pages. Example: "City Keyword" I have been really successful in getting top ranked in google for City Specific searches. However, I have a competitor that is taking the same approach and but this competitor has copied and pasted the same content across all cities and only changing up the City. He is now top ranked and in some cities has a better ranking than we do.

Is this ok to do when taking the City specific landing page approach? The reason I'm asking this is I have a client who wants to take that approach, do i go with the unique content or do I copy and paste. In the example above they yield the same results.

    Thanks in advance,

No matter which approach you take this technique is against google guidlines., please read here https://support.google.com/webmaster.../2721311?hl=en
If the site in question is your site then you can decide if the gain is worth the risk, however doing this for a client you need to be really careful. How do you think they will react if their website is taken out by a manual penalty because of the technique your recommended.

I am not saying here doorway pages dont work, the ydo but they also carry risk

I had a client that wanted me to do the risky link building campaigns of 5+ years back, plus add dozens of subdomains. I talked him out of it, but barely kept my job. He is certainly happy today though, as much of his competition is now eliminated.

So just because your competitor is getting away with it today, doesn't mean he will tomorrow.

Edited: I forgot. He actually fired me, but hired me back when the next SEO crashed his rankings.

What about pages targeting the city where the client business is located? In other words as a web designer I have a client in a city that my business is not located but I have a project page for his site on my website. Is it still a violation of Google's terms to have the city targeted this way? Hope this makes sense?

Not sure I understand your question, but I can't imagine there being a problem with creating a page that targets the city where a client is located.

What I did vs creating all these doorway pages for cities is use a CMS website and catalog component to make my web client portfolio. So if I have a client in a city I optimize that clients portfolio page for web design and that location. I felt that was acceptable since it's not just some doorway landing page to fool search engines. Does this make more sense and do you think it's OK with Google?

    Thank you

It seems like you are leaving out some information...

So you build a client a new website and its using a CMS platform. And then you optimize the site for that client's city. You are supposed to do this, which is why it seems like there is missing information here.

Sorry, it's harder to explain than I thought. I am not talking about the clients site at all.

I am targeting locations by using their page on my website. Each client gets added to my portfolio and I target that city in their page on my site. So a landscape company I built a site for in Chicago for example would target a landscape company website design in Chicago. Realtor site in Milwaukee, etc. So it's not just a doorway page to target a city, it's targeting a city a client is located in and since I make websites it's targeting web design for that city. I don't see how this is any violation of Google since I am a web designer and the client is in that city. Not sure how good of a plan it is but I did not want to do it against any policies Google has.

And yes obviously I am targeting the city for the actual clients website as well. LOL

I should write for you, lol..

So what you are actually saying, is that you are building portfolio pages for each client in your own site and optimizing those pages for the client's city?

Doesn't seem like a bad plan to me as far as any effect on a client. But you would be diluting the power of your own topic, because of diversifying your content keywords. You would or could end up with more content about client topics, than your own.

I'm still working on my site and not sure it the strategy is working at all. Seems like a Algo update a month or so ago did some damage anyway. Or I shot myself in the foot by changing too much too fast and now I don't know what it was.

Thanks for your input and I'll take it you don't feel there are any red flags in my approach. I have a annoying competitor who has doorway pages for 150 cities that all have the same content but different city keywords in the page title and body. It's annoying cause it's working and it's gotta be against Google's deal.

    Cheers.

You need to maintain more content about your own offerings than your client's.

I was once marketing a website with great difficulty. The client's name was "Bear" and he had his name EVERYWHERE. On the page in content, in footers, forms, etc. I finally realized he was coming up for searches about Bears.
