How to target non-geographic TLD (.com) to specific region/country

We have a .com domain, but provide our products and services exclusively within the UK - we're a "local", national company operating from a single location.

What steps can I take to specify our service area (whole of UK) to the search engines?

I've already set geographic-targeting to United Kingdom in and our host server is located in the UK - what other signals do Google and Bing look for?

Do you have a UK address on your site? If so that and the geo targeting should do the trick.

To help you rank better on google UK you should add location details on your site etc as get local links, for example links from your town's website are always good to help with local searches if that's something you want to do?

Thanks - we already have the address in the footer and links from local websites/directories.

I've also added some meta-tags: geo.region, geo.placename, geo.position to our homepage, but I'm concerned they pinpoint our location too much - we deliver our services to our customers nationwide, so our physical location isn't that important, just that we can offer our services to the UK as a whole. So, rather than specifying the small village we're based in, would something like <meta name="geo.placename" content="United Kingdom"> make more sense?
