Getting on the map pack: one national website, versus independent domains

Hi, Based on intuition, my sense is that setting up dozens of domains independent of one another is a safer bet for getting into the local map packs. And possibly also for ranking in the regular/organic part of the page.

I wish it weren't so. It sure would be nice to have one single website with subfolders that target every unique area of the country that I'm interested in (dozens, hundreds of areas even).

Maybe my intuition is wrong though. Maybe a national website with locally targeted subfolders works just as well.

I'd appreciate anyone else's comments, especially if they've tested out the national website with local page targeting.

Scamming your way to the top is the flaw not the fact that you have a single domain.

I disagree with the assumption of scamming/malicious intent.
