Do you create a Google+ page AND a places page for a new business?

I'm working on SEO for a local business and I'm a little confused still about Google+ Local vs Google places. I set up a Google places page and I'm waiting for the postcard to arrive at the business with the PIN to activate our account.

But, should I be creating a Google Plus for business page as well? Or does Google just take our Places page and automatically make a Plus page?

You still need to do both... Google has publicly indicated they will merge the two (in time).

For reference Google Local became Google Places to merge Local & Maps together but when they realized Facebook was a serious threat to their ad network & general market share they needed a product that could compete on the merits and Google+ (is Facebook) with a Places merge will (in theory) prevent businesses from jumping ship.

    • EGOL agrees : I agree... Better do Places for today and Plus for when Places disappears.

Ugh thanks. What a waste of time. I guess I'm off to create a Google+ Local page then...

yeah, anyway they are all from Google.

By the way, from my experience, creating a places page seems to give your site authority.

That's what happened to my company's site.

    Hey Marie,

Hang on - if you have not created a G+ Business page yet DON'T.

Best to wait til the final rollout and let G upgrade your Place Page/+Local Page to a G+ Page.

If you've already done it no worries.

But when I asked upper management at Google for the best advice for people who have NOT yet created a G+ Business page and they agreed the easiest thing is to wait and let G upgrade it automatically.

Thanks Linda! I had posted this question in a few places and followed your advice from your blog. I've decided to wait and let Google create the page for me.

    Thanks!

As long as your brand is involved with Google somehow, I think you'll be OK. Anybody have any idea when places and pages will merge? I hope you're not missing out on anything by waiting it out. Anyway, here's a video that presents a case for Google+ Business Pages: http: //youtu.be/a-GSvLmlYZE

We have a local and a business page at the moment, and they are very different. And I can't see any logical way of link the two. I guess this will come in time with the 'merge'
