Trying to rank for your company name is one of the silliest things you can do, unless your company is already popular enough that people are searching for its name. OR you're already ranking for the keywords you want so you want to secure your company name next.

Although I agree with you it doesn't make local optimization a moot point. Joe Schmoe on average may max out with link acquisition skills and will therefore need to assistance of other techniques to help local results.

The greatest element is links, no doubt.

After that, frequency of your address and phone number found on other sites (another kind of 'link') is a major factor.

Many people want to be high in Places as they view it as a more visible result on the page than the #1 spot (perhaps more so, before Google just changed the Places presentations to be more washed out looking than they were, previously). We've placed several clients above Google Places but we still always strive for places, as well, as some prefer it.
