It means to create something that naturally attract backlinks for your web page by getting people to talk about it,such as participation in forums, social sites to attract the visitors on you site.

A good exmaple of a link bait is a tool that is relevant to your industry that people will want to use.

For example

Check Server Headers Tool provided by SEO Chat is a good example of a link bait. - Oh look I just linked to it!

And if you search for check server headers - what do you know! Link baits work!

The trick is creating something useful that no other site has.

seogoat agrees!
Accsys agrees!
pearlcompany disagrees: Wrong... Link Baiting original meaning was annoying someone or topic so it encourages someone to
link to the page explaining how ignorant they are. I know I created it.

I agree with the above posters. Anything you see on the front page of a website like Digg.com or your favorite social bookmarking site, that is link bait quality material, and if it was created intentionally to attract links, then it is premium link bait.

I think a pretty good list of link bait ideas to get you thinking can be found here:

I hate to ask the obvious question, but why didnt you just search on the forums or look in Google. There are some great explanations knocking around on both.
