What are DoFollow Sites
Hi,
I have been reading about link building and keep coming across the term 'DoFollow', 'Follow' and 'NoFollow' links and sites. What does these mean please? Jimbob |

There is no "dofollow"... well actually that every link that doesn't use "rel="nofollow" a quoted post are something that doesn't really exist http://www.standardzilla.com/2007/02/19/reldofollow/ As for "no follow: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/01/preventing-comment-spam.html

When you post comments on a forum or blog that has a "do follow" you will get a back link if your signature has a link to your website. If the forum or blog has a "do not follow" policy you will not get a back link. Always remember when on blogs and forums to leave a insightful comment or suggestion and not just there for the back link.

Please feel free to check out my dofollow blog search engine: DoFollow Blog Search Contributors Welcome! Theres about 600 dofollow blogs so far but more are on the way. There are some blogs which have added the nofollow back to their comments but are still advertising the dofollow logo. If you find any like this then let me know. |

If you have Firefox get the 'search status' add on, this has a great option to highlight nofollow links on sites. Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/321 to download it.
It is really useful to quickly see if blogs etc have nofollow links without having to look at the code. It is also quite interesting to see how some sites try to sculpt page rank by puttting nofoillows all over their navigation links |

I beg to remark, that the link rel="nofollow" can be also useful for you. With many "nofollow" links you can be on the top with your favorite keyword ;) Just for a sample: httx://tozsdesed.googlepages.com/devizatozsde That's my page and it's the first with the keyword of Forex on Google.hu search engine. It has many nofollow links ;) |

To be honest, i disagree. I've done experiments myself to see if nofollow links count but all the tests proved that they don't (except for Yahoo which seems to index the page at the end of the link but not acknowledge the link text). Matt Cutts made this statement shortly after id done my experiment: Quote:

Be careful how you word things... An unplugged tv set... is it "proven that's it's broken because you can't turn it on" or is it just merely "plugged"? ... how would you prove "it's broken without any power?" ...guess that you're correct because you can't tell any difference? At best any experiment that show no results -- is inconclusive... had you actually seen results - then you can say "it's proven"... you can infer that no results suggests a high probability of a particular finding... but "proven" it isn't... Additionally, while Matt's words can add weight to support a finding - that really isn't proof either. |

I agree, and i remain open minded. But as far as my own eyes and experience can tell, matt is right. Ill explain the experiment in full. I added a page to my site which was completely orphaned except for half a dozen nofollow blog comments with the keyword "professor van billy winkle" (a search with no returned results). The page had some blurb on it and all the structure of a standard page, it had some text but no mention of the anchor text. I sat and waited to see if the orphaned page was indexed and whether it would appear for the anchor text pointing to it. After 8 weeks all the blog posts/mentions on SEO forums had been picked up and appeared for the keyphrase "professor van billy winkle" (just like this page will do within a few days). Still to this day the page remains un-indexed. Except for Yahoo, which has indexed the page and ranks it for the anchor text. I suppose this indicates that Yahoo (despite what they say) ignore nofollow links. I've seen evidence which would suggest otherwise but from my experience that is enough for me to believe Matt's explanation. Although i am confused about the issue with nofollow links appearing in Webmaster Tools. The orphaned page was on my cashcow site.
