3 Million Microsoft links

Hi
I'm new to SEO, having never heard the term until a few months ago. I've just stated a placement year doing internet marketing for a small business.

Comparing our site to our competitors on the link popularity tool at SeoCentro.com I don't understand why there are seperate backlink columns for "Google" "Yahoo" and "Live"?

One of our competitors currently has 16, 1619, and 3590000 respectively.

How can these numbers be so vastly different?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

While all theoretically crawl the internet the same way, their reporting of what they find is different.

Google will report only a sampling of the backlinks to a website. They do this to fight spamming of the linking sites.
Yahoo reports what is usually considered an accurate backlink profile.
Live (or Bing, actually) I am not so sure about. That number seems extremely large, and probably includes all spam links (if it is in fact accurate).

Most tools (I haven't checked the one you mentioned specifically) check your backlinks by searching these engines for the link operator (link:yoursite.com).
If you ever want to verify the numbers, just go to the engine referenced and search for it on your own.

Looking at the history it seems to cycle.

A few weeks at 3 million+ links then a few weeks at around 400 links then back up to 3 million+ etc etc

Dose anybody have any idea what this might be?

Don't know what that live figure comes from as it is totally rubbish. says i have 22 million links..... Given that live no longer exists i imagine it is just giving some type of error message number. yahoo is the most accurate ignore the rest.

It still seems strange that it cycles from a reasonable number to a ridiculous one.

My boss is asking me to look into it. He seems convinced they are doing something dogey.

Click on the number and it takes you to bing with the pointless command they have entered to test your links on bing. This command does not even make sense.

Tell your boss to worry about something else. That figure is just rubbish and of no relevance to anything.
