Relevant Links and how to get them??

Okay so link swapping is out, not allowed to buy links, already submitted to all the free directories. Done some social bookmarking,

Exactly how do you get relevant links?

Anyone care to share the secret and explain this hidden world of link building!

create interesting and unique content and people will link to it.

Of course, because you have no links you aren't in the search engines and because you aren't in the search engines nobody comes to your site which means that no other webmasters see your unique content that they would love to link to.

You thought of just mailing and asking? Otherwise, release a press release about your new site, write an article, sponser something. Be creative

Garythescubaguy has a great link building 101 in his sig though

requesting links to some related sites would do the trick.

A long-term method of getting related backlinks is to interact with other webmasters/bloggers that write on related subjects.

If you have a blog, write about them or link to some of their their work without expecting anything in return. Most people are curious to see who is linking to their site.

Write a mail to someone with a site related to yours. Ask for permission to include an article of theirs in your next newsletter (with proper links back to the original site and all). Ask them a question about something, or just tell them that you like some specific article, blog post or piece of design on their website.

Write proper comments on their blogs and engage in blog comments debates and exchange of opinions.

In short, interact and get to know some webmasters with related pages. In time this will probably lead to some of them linking to your site.

Thanks for all the great responses guys the 101 guide is a biggy, however for example if your selling something, your competitors are your most related sites to get links from, and no one will freely swap links or anything, if in Insurance, is it financial links in general that you should be looking to aquire? Loans, Banks, etc, or should Insurance look for Insurance sites only.

You'd be surprised how many webmasters don't know about effective link building! Most of them are happy to give links if you remind them of the benefits such as the fact that you'll both get a bump in search engine rankings, and you'll now be sharing traffic.

Links are your most important thing. Spend like an hour or two a day building links. Here's what I do:

Set up Google Alerts for keywords that you use heavily on your site

You'll then get an email from Google (you can set the intervals) with links to sites that posted relevant content to your keyword that day. You can then quickly click over, leave a quick comment (with your URL embedded, of course), then go on to the next one. This tactic works wonders!

Good luck!
