I can't vouch for the SEOmoz article - is it worth the 40 bucks googler?
However the second link is a great start. Although the post is a few years old now it is the best bit of free advice on link building you will find. |

Thanks guys. Will have a look at those tomorrow.
I have got some budget to spend on books, guides and training if I can find anything good. The problem from my past experience with on-site stuff is usually finding what information is good and what is not. Dont mind paying for good information ;) |

Amen to that! There is a whole lot of rubbish out there but as you say, good information is worth paying for. I too would be quite eager to pay for a good, up to date article. |

Links
If webmaster tools is only showing 600 odd - and they say they are adding 800 a month, a HUGE alarm bell goes off for me!!
As I wrote somewhere else on here today - Quality not Quantity is what you want. May I ask how much your company has been paying them a month? Give us an indiciation if what they are doing is value for money. Dave

I thought the same after looking at webmaster tools and have written them a stern email. Basically telling them unless they can prove what they are doing is of any benefit we are cancelling. Regarding quantity, my first email to them asked if 800 a month was too many as it seemed a lot to me. My employer is paying £150 per month for the service which I believe is not enough for them to do much of anything really being as most cheap companies charge at least £70-100 per hour. |

Thats way too cheap, so probably ineffective.
Depends on the market you're in too though, but I would expect someone to be paying in the region of £400-£500 minimum for a medium competitive market. £1k+ for very competitive markets.

The site sells laptops to consumers in the UK. Would say that is somewhere between medium and very competitive?
I have spoken to my boss and we have pretty much agreed now to cancel this link building service and do it ourselves. I suppose I better get learning quickly. Is it worth starting another thread asking for good guides / books / training on link building? Will probably get missed in here I am thinking. |

I've just brought 'The art of SEO' which is supposed to be good, not had it yet though.
Also read the stickies on link building. |

Thanks. Have had a quick look at the stickies. Will have a proper look later today. I will have a look at that book - does it have a big section on link building? |

Apparently there is 'a section on link building' in it. Seemed like a good book to get in general for £20 as it has pretty much everything from the reviews I've read.

Book should come today or tomorrow. Got mine from Amazon (works paying so doesn't really matter if its a bit more expensive). Got the seomoz guide and have had a quick scan. Seems pretty good as an introduction to Link Building, not sure it would be much use for people who already have experience in Link Building though. |
