look at your referral traffic through your analytics. Remember that some of the best links you can achieve come from links that help your SEO as well as generated referral traffic.
If the links are ones you have asked for (e-mails etc) you should be keeping a spreadsheet of who you contact and go back to the sites and manually check for the link. If your talking about links received from content or link bait (widgets for example) then you will have to wait until YSE or GWT updates.
I wouldn't worry about checking out your newest links, unless your #1 for every term in your industry you don't have enough.

Sorry, I have a somewhat related question and rather than starting a new thread, I thought I'd add to this post.
How long does it take for the SE's to find a link? I just got on a PR6 Blogroll (do-follow) and after a week it's still not showing up on Yahoo's site explorer. Just curious.

I don't think there is a set time frame. SE's may find the links in a short amount of time but often, they don't update their servers for some time. Unless this has changed recently, then disregard this.
We've experienced SE's taking 4-6 months before the link was actually seen in the SE and actually applied.

How long's a piece of string?! Is there any reason you're keeping an eye on this information? I used to regularly check my backlinks, then I realized I was just wasting time when i could be doing something more useful, like adding content.

Looks like backlinks from good PR sites are added faster than low PR. In my own experience that have been the case, and it even makes logic for Google to crawl popular sites more often.
