Link: from homepage?
If I link to someone (or they to me) does it have to be from my homepage? Or from an internal page? Does it make a lot of difference?

You can link to any page you want as long as they agree. Home page links are pretty valuable so I wouldn't give them up unless you are getting a home page link in return.

Let me rephrase that: is a link from an internal page valuable? I guess this is where PageRank comes in? As long as the internal page has a good PR it's OK, right?

It depends on the page. I think if it has a good PR and is only one click away from the home page it is good. We have some internal pages on our site that get almost as much traffic as our home page and have the same PR as our home page so an internal link on one of those pages would be as good as the home page, especially if the content on that page more closely matches the content you are optimizing for. When it comes to building links I think you need to look at the big picture. |
