An interesting question - since I'm now in the position of sending email to ask people to link, yet I have zero tolerance for spam coming to me, and send them all to www.spamcop.net.

So when I start sending email to other webmasters, the wording must be chosen with great care.

I especially hate the ones from SEO companies, that tell me they have personally visited my site, and can get me into all the search engines, and I get 10 of them in a row, with exactly the same wording, for different web sites I run.

if you are referring to a link to www.xyz.org - I can't find it, and if it's there I need to remove it. Otherwise I assume you just typed xyz to mean any web site.

It you are referring to the values that appear next to each page, that is a measure of how well that page matches my evaluation ind keyword rules.

The code is generated in the HTML by the Zeus software I am using to search and create the indexes. See http://www.parenting-advice.net/links/linking_information.html

Doing it manually sucks, but I find that it generates the best links, especially if you do your homework.

I do search engine maintenance (link building and copywriting) for several sites, and I have found the best links (from relavent sites, high PR, low # of outgoing links) to be ones that I have sought out myself.

just a thought

I agree curvity. I do however find the website "candidates" through software, but do make sure I visit the page myself. As you say, same theme, high/low PR, No. of outgoing links etc. form the basis of a yeah or neah in my book, and no software can output (yet) all 3 of those criteria for a given website. There is also the problem of these software solution pages being filtered out by google or specific algo checks for them being implemented (it's happened before, just ask webpositongold).

It only takes half hour to knock up an "Other resources" page by hand anyway if you have planned well.

I've tried out the Zeus and the Arelis tools, but to be honest, I will always end up taking perhaps more time by manually researching links. Better 3x high PR few outgoing links than 30x pr 3 "link pages" in my book.

Don't get the impression the Zeus tool is an automatic link generator, it does the grunt work, searching around for possible links. The first night I used it, it found more links than I could have possibly have found by myself without spending more time than I have available,

After it's found the links you still have to do the manual decisions, they are only considered possible canditates - you still go through each one - but that's also made easier, as each site pops up in a browser, so you can surf through the site deciding is it's appropriate.

Then you can delete it entirely, leave it for future consideration, or add it to your links and assign a category or categories.

You can still do manual hunting around by yourself, and add those sites to it's list.

After you've done all this, it will aid you in sending emails to other sites, since it has an email-out client embedded, and has picked up the email addresses when scanning the web sites. It also will audit "partners" to see if they have links back to your site.

In fact you don't have to use it just for link exchanging. I'm using it to track down websites on a particular subject tha'ts of interest to me, saves my wandering through the search engines.

Like any tool, it has to be used with intelligence.

How do you determine your Google PR? I see that term thrown out a lot and don't understand it. Please advise...

Thanks...

You have to download and install a program from Google, but it only works with Internet Explorer. Then every site you browse shows the Page rank in a little box, along with some other info.

Now that I have a grey bar on my site, how do I convince someone that my site is good to link to. The site is clean as a whistle. I know the grey bar (hoping) is temporarily, but I need to gain more links.

Also, what would be better, send an email to the webmaster or sales/marketing personel?

Thanks in advance.

From the evidence I have gathered since last Sunday , I believe google is hunting out poorly designed links pages and banning them.
Many Zeus directories have taken a bashing resulting in page0 or banned.
"Links to you" have also taken a bashing.
I use zeus and find it a great program for building the links directory however I always manually hunt out good sites to link to as its to much bother using the robot over night only to find the sites its found to be link partners either arnt indexed in google or dont have a mail address to contact them and many other reasons I find not to link to them.
Many sites that are using zeus name the links index page "themeindex" and are now banned by google , if this has happened to anyone reading this , then change your themeindex page to /links/index or any other page name.
I do believe google is trying to reduce the power of inbound links, however you need to make sure your zeus directory dosnt look like any other zeus directory to avoid a page rank 0 or ban.
Let me know your thoughts people :

a small question - what is defined as a "link farm"? Do I get penalized for linking to such a page, or if such a page links to me?

Is it true that you can be penalised for having too many sites linked to yours?

I request links exchange manually and I usually try to get sites that are of similar content to mine.

In my experience it's far more effective to send emails to the webmaster, sales and marketing tend to ignore your request.

Linking

Maybe I can help a little,
I use Zeus for my http://www.sport-betting-links.com site and now have a rating of 65,000 on www.alexa.com and a first place position on www.google.com under sport betting, third under sports betting and fifth under betting the last time I looked.
I used Zeus for free until I finally purchased the Pro version last month, so if anyone has questions about Zeus, let this be an example. I only link with sites concerning what my site is about and DO NOT STRAY.
Hope this helps and I have made a constructive suggestion.

You need to download the google toolbar using IE...

Once you have it running, there is a new tooldbar on your brownser window (in IE). Put your mouse over the bar which shows their page rank (green/white/or grey depending on the value google gives the site). A text window will show up when you mouse over (like an Alt text window) showing the page rank (like "3 of 10" or some other borg-sounding number).

Sorry if this is overly simplified, but it used to drive me nuts when people would just say I had to download the toolbar. ITS NOT THAT SIMPLE.. you have to know how to use it, and if you don't know, vague instructions from people who assume you know too much will not help.

Good luck....
Matt
