downlod seo quake for firefox and use the yahoo links command on that and see who your competitors have linking to them and then try and get them to link to you.

He specifically mentioned he was doing SEO. Building backlinks through forum posting with no follows will not help him there. Forum posting is usually only good for building traffic, not rank.

You can build links by posting on forums, articles (e-zines), Yahoo answers etc.

Too see high amount of back links pointing to your website through forum posting but it's not much more valuable when PR matters.

My strategy is ongoing and encompasses six different ways that I scour the web for links:

1) hundreds of directory listings (all free ones with good PR). I change the anchor text and descriptions so there is not too much duplication going on.

2) hundreds of blog comments (all at "do follow" places). I try to stay relevant--- if you become on good terms with the blogger they'll let you sign in Anchor Text (to many blog owners, they must think my real name is "Sacramento Weddings"...LOL)

3) hundreds of board postings (all relevant topics for my web site, particularly the ones that are about Mobile Disc Jockey or Music topics!)

4) dozens of free listing sites, places that are relevant to my key word topics (music, disc jockeys, djs, weddings, karaoke, American Idol).

5) Paid directory site (PR 5)that charges $200 per year but provides me with several hundred indexed pages, ones that all link to my site. This directory is unique because its specific to my key words: wedding djs, wedding disc jockeys. They also let you compose your own HTML on these indexed pages, so you can customize your anchor text links.

6) Blogging my own Blog (still a work in progress): this is one area that I've been procrastinating!
