How to build One-Way Links
Ok everyone, I need some more ideas on how to build one-way links. I'd like to get a discussion started on tips/techniques for this. Here's what I currently do:
1. Directory submissions including DMOZ
here's a list of directories i use, and I just submit away
http://www.5thage.com/List-of-Directories.html
2. Free to reprint articles... i write them and submit them to places like goarticles.com ... here's a list
http://www.softwaremarketingresource.com/article-submissions.html
3. Blog Links - if you maintain a blog, link to some of your other sites.
4. Buy text links - ocassionaly i'll purchase text links if the deal seems like it's worth it.
5. Triangle linking - site a links to site b, site b links to site c thus creating 2 one-way links.
6. Signature links - even though these don't count for much i still do it.
Ok, this is about all i can think of for now. How do you guys get them?

Good list Todd:
This comes straight from the master, EGOL. Write good unique content. It will attract links.
I have a business that is not oriented toward content. Regardless. We've kept updating and adding content. We've attracted some one ways on that basis alone.

Have to agree on the content - Recently added some content regarding the use of products 'Case studies' if you will....IBLs shot up all over the place (along with the all important sales)
Submitting articles to some of the article engines and that is always good for a few IBLs aswell as putting together some RSS feeds (perhaps not so permenant but anyways)

7. Write testimonials I've mentioned this in other threads, but if you write testimonials or reviews of other people's site/services/whatever, and then send the testimonial to them, you can let them know that they are free to use the testimonial as long as they keep the link to your site in it. Most people are happy to have a testimonial to place on their site.

adding to my own thread.
Ok, heres a GREAT trick from back in the day.. (i've posted it in another thread once, but i'll repost it here)
Email a college professor and ask them to write an article for you about a topic on your website. If they agree then publish the article and give them a thank you note. More likely than not, they'll link to their own article from their webpage which will be a very reputable .edu site with a high page rank.
more tricks by todd coming soon
PS. anyone need a testimonial ;)

How much are you paying the professor? Most of them that I know don't sit around smoking their pipes... they value their time and don't want for things to do. You will need a site that they can point at when they apply for promotion or tenure and say... I've got some articles published on professor.com or nature.com or psychology.com.... articles on joebloewebsite.com just don't impress the committee (have been on and through those committees a few times).
However, if you have an academic focus site with substantial good content already in place then this idea is a KILLER.

This has been said before but content is starting to work well for me. About a third of my hits are coming from content pages. I just need to do a better job to convert them to paying customers . My site is a child gift site and I have found teachers and retired teachers, for example, are willing to write some good articles at a decent rate which adds credibility to my site, I hope....

8. Write Dynamite Content Geez.... I can't believe that the most powerful method of getting lots of inbound links is the one that is always ignored. I'll gladly hog this one.

I just came across this technique that might be considered a 'trick', not sure though. I need opinions.
Earlier this week I got an RSS feed for my surfing website from surfline.com . When I implemented it I noticed they linked to outside articles but through their own website using a jump.php script.
For instance, the url was something like www.surfline.com/jump.php?redirect=http://www.othersite.com/article.htm ....
I thought this was kind of clever, syndicating an RSS feed with other people's articles (on their sites), but making the backlink go to your own site first.
So, i was wondering if this is a clever technique for getting backlinks (syndicating an RSS feed w/backlinks to a jump script), or if it's just a waste of time? What do you guys think?
(sidenote: they also put their link in the bottom of each description (on the RSS feed) linking back to the homepage, so if the jump script doesn't pass backlink value to their site the other link surely does)

This is a great thread and some really awesome suggestions by all. Gonna book mark it for some of my other information based projects I'm piddlin with! Thanks Guys and Gals!
I guess I'll add a couple, but probably not the most affective. Just ask for them. When asking for them, tell them what is unique about your site and the information contained in it etc. I picked up a few hundred one way links using this process of "blasting" related sites last year by just asking them to link to a target site - got some reciprical offer to which works for me. Was a ton of work though and got some "nasty" responses to.
I get more and more every week just by asking my visitors now on every page of the site to link to it ;) so I don't bother with the "mad blasting" anymore...Yeah Yeah... Mr. Lazy...lol

9. Ask for the Link I just made a button "Link to mysite.com" and plan to post it at the top of my vertical navigation bar - across the site. This approach will certainly not work for most of my sites but I have a strong info site where this might work (if it will work anywhere).
The button will link to a page with blah blah... if you like what you see on this site help us share it worldwide.... and code that will give them a few variations of anchor text.
I am also going to make a couple of small banners and buttons that webmasters might use. If I offer some really attractive artwork, then I might get a few good links - especially from teachers and professors.

How to get one-way links
Think outside the box. here's a couple of ideas...
Once you find a good site you'd like a link from:
Write them a REAL email telling them what you like (no BS) about the site, and offer them a Real resource (your link) on a Real Page of their website to help their visitors.
Find a broken link on their site using a tool.
Let them know you were browsing their site and found this error and just wanted to bring it to their attention, and, oh by the way, Can you link to this good resource from you page at....so long as you're going in to fix the link ;)
Call them up on the phone. (what a novel idea!)
Tell them what a great site they have, then, let them know that you have a good resource that could be added to one of thier pages to help their viewers even more.
to expand on "buying Links" - Be Creative.
Offer to buy thier office pizza one day in exchange for a link advertisement.
or
Give them a product for free and ask them to review it on their site.
Every site you come accross which you'd like a link from presents a new opportunity. How you utulize that opportunity is the game.
I'll also add:
Stay away from cookie cutter solutions...filters eat em for breakfast ;)
