Lici - a great question indeed... i have no idea how google or matt cutts can say they are devaluing this 'technique' for linking. sure they can see what IP addresses links are coming from, but i still don't believe that they can 'penalize' your site for doing this... frankly, i don't even know how they would be able to tell you are doing this....it sounds like a 'scare tactic' or maybe something they are striving for in the future... sounds a lot like them saying that 'only themed links matter' (when at least now, all links still count) .... i have used triangle linking tactics in the past with great success.... so you got me...

anyone else have any thoughts/comments on this? i'd also like to know.

G can't penalize for triangular linking. It is something that can happen naturally, so it would only hurt their results if they were to do this.

They can however give less value to triangular links much like they now do with reciprecal links. However no algorithm could determine if the tringular linking happened naturally or not so I doubt that this would be implemented either.

G can lower your rankings if your outgoing links are not relevant, as this is something only the webmaster can control (with the exception of blogs, forums, etc. as the webmaster may not see what is posted all the time). This brings us to the possiblity of LV and coop sites one day being penalized or even banned. Obviously the webmaster set up the networks on their sites usually with the intent of gaining more backlinks. I myself am being precautious about it and only setting up link exchange networks on my forums and my blog, as irrelevant back links don't seem to hurt them as much AND if the sites are banned or penalized my traffic will only go down about 5-10% for my main site.

just my 2.5 cents

this is also hard for me to believe (at least at this time)... sure google has always been striving for 'related' or 'themed' links, but can they really tell? i guess i should say, can anyone provide me proof of a site dropping in rankings because they linked to unthemed areas?

i understand incoming links are a different story because you can't be penalized for who links to you, but i still see several high ranking sites w/outgoing links to non-themed topics. advertisments are a great example... many sites advertise non-related text-ads and don't see a penalty (or drop in rankings) ... and what about sites like my surfing site.. i could link my surfing site to hotel sites, property rental sites, auto mechanics etc.. (yes they would be off-topic links, yet still relevant to my visitor's because they are all in the same geographic area) .... get what i'm trying to say? i just don't see how 'themes' can be determined as of yet.... one day i do agree that G will figure it out though.

I do alot of 3-way linking, where both my sites: site a and site b, and the other exchangee's site site c, site b links to site c, while site c links back to site a, generating only one-way links to site a

i also use linkmetro.com, linkmarket.com, link-vault.com - have over 10,000 BL's from these, very quality links

occasionally ill buy text links if its a bargain

1. Directory submissions including DMOZ
here's a list of directories i use, and I just submit away
http://www.5thage.com/List-of-Directories.html

2. Free to reprint articles... i write them and submit them to places like goarticles.com ... here's a list
http://www.softwaremarketingresource.com/article-submissions.html

3. Blog Links - if you maintain a blog, link to some of your other sites.

4. Buy text links - ocassionaly i'll purchase text links if the deal seems like it's worth it.

5. Triangle linking - site a links to site b, site b links to site c thus creating 2 one-way links.

6. Signature links - even though these don't count for much i still do it.

Ok, this is about all i can think of for now. How do you guys get them?

Here's what I have been doing;

1. Triangle link (but only 2 per site). You can get some good cross-link formulas with 3 or more sites to guide you where to put them.

2. I run 5 blogs with the keywords in the URL, seperated by hyphens. I use RSS to feed fresh content, then go back and create links on the keyword I want pointing back to the relative page on my website

3. Joined Linkmarket - cheap and easy (but the customer service sucks)

4. Added "link to us" page with banners text links

5. Created an affiliate site, then used SEO Elite to find sites linking to competitors site and marketed the affiliate program

6. Created eBay auctions for charitable organizations (.org's) for $10 and requested a link to the auction, store item, and my site, essentially getting 3 links for nothing (I add the cost of the contribution and the ebay listing fee) to my min. bid)

** DID YOU CATCH THAT?**
anotherwords I've spent very little effort and time, donated to sevral worth-while organizations, and got 3 BL's from 5/10 to 7/10 for next to nothing.

That's my story and I'm stickin to it!

Gary

We are mainly concentrating on "Triangle linking" or "parallel linking".

It is the fastest way to get 1 way links.

help me out with one way links.

is there any way to do it easy? or do you have to do it the way of posting articles, and press releases. it feels like i've been doing it for forever and no results.

dont just use articles and press releases. use a variety of methods, you don't want to put all of your eggs in one basket.

What I do and I guess it works really well is that I offer free membership to my services for one year for a backlink and now I have hundreds of nice links from reputable blogs and sites?

Hope this helps, too.

Email a college professor and ask them to write an article for you about a topic on your website. If they agree then publish the article and give them a thank you note. More likely than not, they'll link to their own article from their webpage which will be a very reputable .edu site with a high page rank.

more tricks by todd coming soon

I have written an application to help me with one way links. It can help with targeted back-links. I am not going to make this an advertisement, so if anyone is interested let me know and I will send you some information. I thank the other for more strategies.

If You are providing any service through your site, Provide "Free Ebook" On your service expertise.
It would be more useful if its having unique content about your services.
Many sites like to offer Free ebooks to their visitors and this would bring you lots of traffic.

We’ve built a client side website CMS that we give away for free to non profit organisations or up to 5 pages to anyone. It’s a cross between an online CMS like Joomla and blogging but just installs itself on the user’s PC so there is no server to set up, just and automatic upload. Of course, every site it creates has a discrete custom back link built in on every page.
The beauty is that all we have to do is offer a free download from our site and we get lots of back links for no cost or effort.
It also works as a viral marketing tool for our business and helps us create our own text rich site more quickly.
See (URL address blocked: See forums rules) if you want to see how it works.
