article submission and directory submission are the most effective ways to secure large # of one-way links. It takes creativity and hard work to ge a few high-quality one-way links.

I'm not sure that point 5 will reach the goal. I quote from Hilltop algo paper:
"The affiliation relation is transitive: if A and B are affiliated and B and C are affiliated then we take A and C to be affiliated even if there is no direct evidence of the fact. " I know that Hilltop is just a part of Google algo. I add that almost for sure a link is not an affiliation. but what you guys think about it? |

I have read this total thread... many great ideas. If I were to distill all that has been written into a formula that, between the lines, everyone seems to be in agreement on as far as getting the illusive one-ways: Good Content + Asking for a Link = One-way Backlinks. It ain't brain surgery... make a site you are proud of that other themed sites will and do appreciate and will link to. To build such a site takes time, patience, and more time, but it will stand the test of time.

There are some very good ideas in here - great contributions everyone.
Surprisingly, a lot of other ideas were overlooked in the thread: 1. Link Brokers - buying/renting links can be a good thing if done properly 2. Controversy - post on forums and blogs where you genuinely, substantively disagree with something - controversy creates drama and drama gets links 3. Join communities - blogs, forums, chat sites, IRC channels, etc. and become active - when people are curious to know more about you, they'll find your site, and since they're people who are involved with the web, they'll often link to you on their blog or site. 4. Get noticed in the press - an article that mentions you in a newspaper, online news site, or other distribution service will bring lots of eyeballs, and result in at least a few links. 5. Offline promotion - business cards, brochures, billboards, side-of-the-bus ads. Be humorous and be engaging in these types of ads so people who see them will wonder all the way home, "I wonder what's at xyz.com". There are hundreds, maybe thousands more. Let's keep the thread going! |

1) Spam comment logs! Just kidding.
2) Pass out flyers at high schools for a $50 dollar contest for best-written article on a particular subject. I have gotten over 80 full-page articles this way. The school paper and my website published winner. What’s really cool is I received 80 well written pages for $50 bucks. All scanned and placed on site. Kids families even linked to articles from family Blogs. 3) Start an Awards contest. I gave away 4 Awards for my www.BransonCritic.org website. The winners of the Awards put my website on their TV ads, websites, newsletters. http://www.bransoncritic.org/BransonCriticAwards.htm The Awards cost me $96 dollars plus shipping. I will have an Awards program every year. Last edited by bigdoug : May 4th, 2005 at 09:31 AM. |

I have a few reservations on article submissions. When our site is small, it is easy to submit good articles and get accepted. But as our site grows and gains visibility, acceptance level becomes remote (especially with sites who compete each other).

If you add compliments about site you are submitting and you are giving an article of real value and not market hype, why would any site turn down free text? Especially if the website viewers love the article. That was what the old web was about. I guess those days are over. All everyone cares about is PR. |

big doug, that's a great trick!! flyers at highschools...genius... (it's actually too much motivation for me to go out and do, but a great trick nonetheless)
rand- i wanted to give you some rep too, but it won't let me right now... sez i have to spread more rep to other people first...hehe... anyway great idea about controversy... you're absolutely right...controversy definitely spreads links... look how popular danny wall is right now after making that bogus statement about the ADD URL form... anyway keep the ideas coming guys... good thread.

ok, here's my latest trick... some might argue these are not 'valueable links' but they are one-way links.
currently i'm building a network of free webhosts, blogs and any other free service i can get my hands on... i'm bookmarking them all and adding a little bit of content on each one... (usually an article from one of my other sites etc.) getting a couple links to each one get's them indexed, and eventually i'll have a whole network of websites/blogs that i can use for one-way links to sites i'll be promoting. (yes this takes a long time and shifts my focus, but i think it will be worth it in the long run...even though the PR won't be that great) On that note another good trick to get unique IP's webspace is to trade hosting instead of trading links. For instance, if you have a hosting reseller program you can partner up with a buddy who also has reseller hosting and trade packages. (example: i'll give you 25mb, 100mb bandwidth if you give me the same) .... PS. if anyone wants to trade super small hosting plans PM me |

Thanks Todd,
Your ideas are great too. Here in Fl I found a great source of free writing. We have thousands of adult trailer parks full of retired people. They are bored with shuffleboard, sour from swimming too much, and golf only has so many rounds. Each trailer park has a clubhouse and inside there is a board for posting news, things for sale, events ext. Start a writing club. Older ones have many passions about life. You would not believe how many older ones enjoy writing if they are appreciated for their thoughts. In this regard you must be genuine when it comes to their feelings. I personally enjoy the wisdom of the senior crowd and being thankful comes easy. Here is your reward for putting forth the effort: Endless, high opinionated articles on almost any topic you create for them. They will allow their names and pictures to go up on site witch ads tremendous credibility. Imagine having 9 successful men and women in their early 60's write either testimonial on your product (obviously, you would allow them to try product) or experiences in life. Example: I have found older ones who have more connections than you could ever know. What blew me away, were how many millionaires (retired from CEO positions of small companies, small book writers, ex-business administrators, stock traders, and women with 15 grand children ext) who were successful, but living modestly in their retired last years. I had a group of men write an article on why fishing was better when they were kids and the contrast of today. My God, once we put the passionate articles on an environmental website, segments appeared all over the net with solid clean links from all the environmental nuts. People, especially the elderly, bring credibility to the table. And they will write for free. Just don’t have them vote on who has best article, because they will get into a fight! Happens every time. No contest either. Everyone should be acknowledged for his or her good points and spread the love. If you do that you will have more articles for your site than you can dream of. They can be sent to PRWEB.com, local newspapers, travel magazines, real estate, and the list goes on. One of my hobby sites, www.bransoncritic.org is set up to receive reviews from people, along with editorials and news. Everyone writes for free and the site receives 2-300 unique visitors a day. It is already gaining modest Back-links without any effort from me. In 2 years it will be the dominant site for its region with over 3000 pages, all unique content, and with little effort on my part. People are just now linking the articles, so it’s starting to pick up speed. Just remember you heard it first on SEO-Chat Lets keep this thread going. I love all your Ideas- Last edited by bigdoug : May 4th, 2005 at 05:42 PM. |

As far as I have read this thread nobody has suggested to make a Web site do something useful for visitors free of charge like personal finance calculator or something like this, it is better than just text content because this free service may be made unique and hard to clone thus it will bring one way links rather soon.

You are right Todd - Blog links are great because Google sees them as on target. I use my Blogs to link back to other sites and my-own. Your correct, in that it is a sweet one-way link

Search - first of all welcome to the forums. you have a great suggestion, but i think that falls under the 'quality content' category... free tools are definitely considered quality content, and many people WILL link to them naturally... digitalpoint.com is a perfect example... shawn get's thousands upon thousands of links because of the free tools provided. i'm sure the guys here at SEOchat have the same thing going for them too. great suggestion though... those fortunate enough to be skilled in programming have a far better advantage over an average peon such as myself

Mikkel (deMib Svendson) was telling me yesterday that one (funny or cool) short movie, e-mailed to 25 popular bloggers got a company he worked for nearly 4 million visitors in the first month... Sounds like a pretty good tactic.
Also heard about a nice black hat one, but probably shouldn't be passing those ideas around |
