How much traffic do you get from backlinks?

In the last month approximately 5% of our total traffic came from backlinks as opposed to Search engines or direct. I was pretty pleased with that percentage. I haven't checked this in the past. Our traffic during this month was unseasonably high. Not only was the backlink traffic pretty good in my estimation, but because it is tightly themed in most cases we consistently receive a fair number of conversions from them.

Besides helping with SERPs these backlinks specifically add to our conversions. How do the rest of you do with backlink traffic?

Dave

I've averaged about 10% of referrers from non-search engine sources over the last week. Two industry portals send us extremely qualified traffic.

A large percentage of our backlinks are from universities (.edu). We get 3.7% of our traffic from those .edu backlinks.

Some big differences. Guess it depends on the website, the topic, and the volume and relevancy of backlinks.

It also depends upon how well the site has pages ranked on high traffic terms...

I get about 65% of my traffic from external links... around 120 visitors per day.

It's mostly because we are ranked well only for a few select phrases at Yahoo, MSN and the smaller SEs, but ranked nowhere in Google. We are, however, linked to by 11-15 of the top 20 pages listed on Google for many of our search terms - I've been using it as a cane since I realized sandbox wasn't going to let us out. It is frustrating to think of how many visitors we would be getting if we were in the front of the pack with our link partners

This last month, 84% of my referrers were backlinks. Scary enough, 75% of those hits came from only two sites. Google gives me 10% of referrers, Yahoo 5% and MSN 3%. Kinda in the same boat as Randfish right now.

This information really depends on the type of site, serps rankings, etc.

We only receive about 70 Searches/day. The great bulk of our traffic is direct. The traffic from backlinks, while smaller than the serps traffic, has slowly grown as a result of more backlinks. A big chunk of it comes from a relevant forum. Virtually all the backlinks that deliver traffic are highly relevant.

Before our serps started to improve our percentage of visits from the most relevant backlinks were much much higher. Once we started showing up in the appropriate categories, searchers began to find us direct and traffic from those traditional sources diminished. Overall as our serps increased and we started getting more traffic from the SE's the increase from this area was greater than the loss from the relevant backlinks. In hindsight I'd say they were compensation for lower serps. In that regard themed backlinks are extremely important.
