Does link exchange work?

I have a few sites with software products. Let's say "text editors" for example. I want to improved my positions in search engines and was wondering if link exchange can help me. I want to exchange with somewhat similar sites like pdf editors, html editors, etc.

1) Will it help me?
2) Is it possible that it might hurt me? I already have good positions for some keywords. I definitely don't want to risk my sites.

Yes. Some people might say that link exchange is totally dead, but it is not. Google is giving less importance to them.

Link back from any sites will not hurt you, but be careful. Linking out to bad site, can hurt you.

So if I'll exchange links only with the similar sites, it will not hurt me.

I actually have a few sites. Let's say I really want to improve positions for site A and I don't really care about B. Will it make sense to link out from site B and ask for link back to site A?

yes in some ways, because it help boost your site's rank bit by bit. but do it gradually so that it won't damage your site in a bad way.

Link exchange are helpful if the site was related to your niche. But not give high value as one way link from related site.

1) Yes link exchange will work if link page is cached, sufficient text related to your link and not having more than 20 partner links.

2) Make sure you do not have more than 25 links pointing out from your link partner pages.

Thanks a lot guys. I'll try to find partners in related niches and make sure they don't have a lot of outgoing links.

We can get traffic from the website where we do link exchange but its more benefical if we get links from home page of theme based site.

Just keep them minimal. Too much reciprocal linking might take a toll on your site in the long run.

Hello,

I think the straight link-exchange doesn't work because according to the theory of Google search engine's programmers the unselfish links to your site are the perfect to the determine of your Page Rank. If there are many unselfish linkings to your site it is the proof of your site's popularity.

The straight link-exchange is not a good way because the Google will detect that you have stilted relationships with other sites. Too many stilted relationships with other relevant pages is the proof that your site has not any popularity rather you have a business.

If you wanna increase the Page Rank of your site the best way is the cross link-exchange.

What does it mean the cross link-exchange? Just imagine you have a site and the other for the link-exchanges. Your link-exchange partner also have a site and the other reserved for the link-exchanges.

A= your site and B= your link-exchange site
C= Your partner's site and D=Your partner's link-exchange site

B has a linking to C and D has a linking to A

Thanks to the technics of cross link-exchange the debug of your link-exchanges for the Google is totally impossible and that's the reason why you can get better and better Page Rank for your site without any problem or sanction.

I think you my be underestimating Googles capabilities... Since they are also involved in domain registration (and can access reverse IP details for servers like anybody else) I can't imagine it would be difficult for them to identify the majority of such exchanges.

I don't remember seeing any reference to "unselfish links"... and I can tell you that "straight link exchanges" DO work (and so they should)!
They might be less valuable than one-way links and - if you have nothing other than reciprocal links you will stick out like a sore thumb, but a reasonable number of link exchanges alongside a number of one-ways will (and should) still improve your rankings.

If I create the ultimate guide to pink widgets and another website creates the ultimate list of pink widget suppliers, we would likely both want to link to each-other... nothing to do with PR or SEO, simply because we both have sites with valuable (and varied) information about the same subject.

Google might be suspicious if my site contains nothing but reciprocal links, but some reciprocal links will exist for the right reasons and should (and do) share relevance, PR and "ranking power" with each other.
