What would Google think of building links through a competition?

EXAMPLE:

To enter the competition you have to link to a certain URL and anchor text.

That depends.

If your competitors don't see anything wrong with it... I doubt Google will notice.

The firm netfirms used to be number one for "web hosting" for a long time based on the principle - we supply free web hosting for sites that must link back to us on the home page. They were of course looking for paid hosting from the google placement.

Not sure if its relevant but that position was dongraded very substantially at some point. What you describe may similarly become downgraded if it becomes too successful I'd think.
